LYNCHBURG, V.A. – The fourth-ranked University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team fell 4-3 in a hard-fought road game against No. 6 Liberty University Thursday,evening at LaHaye Ice Center.
After a scoreless first period, Liberty struck first with a goal from Liam Cox-Smith at 8:00 in the second. The Jimmies answered at 17:01, with Carson Brown scoring an unassisted goal to tie the game. The Flames regained the lead just over a minute later on a goal from Mason Smith, taking a 2-1 advantage into the third period.
Liberty extended its lead to 3-1 early in the final frame. Jamestown battled back, with Matthew McIntyre scoring at 10:23, assisted by Brown, to make it a one-goal game. Liberty's Kal Essenmacher scored what would be the game-winner at 12:15.
The Jimmies did not quit, pulling within one again on a power-play goal from Brad Fortin at 19:00, with assists from Kaelan Shelton and McIntyre. However, time ran out on the comeback effort.
Jamestown outshot Liberty 43-32. Brandon Weare took the loss in net, making 28 saves on 32 shots. Liberty's Konrad Kausch earned the win with 40 saves.
The Jimmies were efficient on the power play, converting their only opportunity, and successfully killed off Liberty's lone power play. The two teams return to the ice Friday evening at 6 p.m. Central to close out the two-game series.
