ACHA Division 1 Men's Hockey

No. 9 Jimmies open Chicago Classic with win over No. 2 Ohio

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – In a stunning reversal of fortunes, the ninth-ranked University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team snapped a four-game losing skid and halted No. 2 Ohio University's seven-game winning streak with a gritty 2-1 victory at Canlan Sports-Romeoville on Friday night.

Anchored by a 30-save performance from goaltender Brandon Weare, the Jimmies (10-6) managed to stifle an Ohio offense that had entered the contest boasting a 15-1 record. Despite being outshot 31-17, the Jimmies rallied from an early deficit to secure the upset entirely within a frantic first period.

Ohio University drew first blood midway through the opening frame. Capitalizing on a power play opportunity, Drake Nabozny netted his fourth goal of the season at the 10:21 mark, assisted by Lance Mengel and Jack Glen, giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

However, Jamestown responded ferociously in the dying minutes of the period. Matthew McIntyre leveled the score at 18:19, firing home his fifth of the year off assists from Alek Erichuk and Kole Christensson.

Just 23 seconds later, UJ seized the momentum and the lead. Carson Brown found the back of the net at 18:42, with help from Brad Fortin and Kaleb Percival. The lightning-quick strike turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 advantage heading into the first intermission.

The final forty minutes turned into a defensive clinic by Jamestown, as the offense dried up for both sides. Ohio University ramped up the pressure in the second period, outshooting Jamestown 11-5, but could not solve Weare.

The third period saw the Bobcats desperately seeking the equalizer, firing 13 shots on goal compared to the Jimmies' five. Jamestown's defense was tested repeatedly, particularly on the penalty kill. They successfully weathered a major penalty in the second period and killed off two crucial minor penalties in the third.

Garrett Alderman took the loss in net for Ohio, stopping 15 of 17 shots. He was pulled for an extra attacker late in the game, but the Jimmies held firm to preserve the 2-1 victory.

Jamestown returns to the ice on Saturday against No. 7 Drury University at 3:40 p.m.
