Fortin sets UJ goals record; No. 4 Jimmies fall to No. 6 Liberty in road series finale

LYNCHBURG, V.A. – Brad Fortin became the University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 men's hockey all-time leading goal scorer, but the fourth-ranked Jimmies fell to No. 6 Liberty University, 5-3, in a hard-fought contest Friday night at the LaHaye Ice Center.

The Jimmies struck first in the opening period, with Fortin finding the back of the net at 9:25, assisted by James Hooton and Carson Brown. It was the seventh goal of the season and 65th of his career for the UJ captain, breaking the previous record of 64 set by Jason Richter (2016-2022). Liberty answered with two goals, including a power-play tally, to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

After a scoreless second period, Liberty extended its lead to 3-1 early in the third. The Flames added a power-play goal at 7:24, which would stand as the game-winner, making it 4-1.

UJ's offense fought back, as Sully Ross scored at 12:37 from Jacob Thomas to cut the deficit. Fortin added his second goal of the night at 17:49, with an assist from Trey Stephenson, to pull the Jimmies within two. However, Liberty sealed the game with a late goal, making the final 5-3.

The Jimmies outshot the Flames 39-29. Brandon Weare made 24 saves in the loss.

Liberty capitalized on its opportunities, going a perfect 2-for-2 on the power play, while Jamestown was held scoreless on its two chances.

Jamestown is back in action on Friday, November 14, beginning a two-game series at Minot State University.
