JAMESTOWN, N.D. — The eighth-ranked University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team rebounded from Thursday's season-opening loss, delivering a dominant performance at John L. Wilson Arena on Saturday night, defeating No. 11 University of Mary 5-1.
The Marauders (3-1-0) struck first at the 3:55 mark of the opening period when Dain Sardelli notched his third goal of the season off an assist from Dylan Cunningham. Jamestown (1-1-0)responded just under four and a half minutes later as
Jace Grabinsky netted the equalizer, assisted by
Marcus Fritel and
Rylan Gage at 8:13.
Leonardo Kahlhammer put the Jimmies ahead for good at 15:19, assisted from
Eli Cardosi and
James Hooton to give UJ a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
UJ extended its advantage in the second period on the power play. At 11:11,
Carter Johnson pushed the lead to 3-1 with assists from
Ray Warrack and Grabinsky. Jamestown maintained control despite serving 23 penalty minutes on six infractions—including a 5-minute major and 10-minute game misconduct assessed to Kahlhammer at 15:02 of the second—holding UMary to 0-for-4 on the power play.
The Jimmies sealed the win with two additional goals in the third period.
Bryton Morrow made it 4-1 just 2:50 into the frame, assisted by
Cameron Oien and
Cai Robinson.
James Hooton capped the scoring at 15:42 of the third period off assists from Cardosi and
Wyatt Johnson.
Jamestown controlled the pace of play throughout the contest, outshooting UMary 45-23 overall. Goalie
Brandon Weare picked up the victory in net for Jamestown, turning aside 22 of 23 shots. Marauder goaltender Caleb Cross stopped 40 of 45 shots in the loss.
UJ takes on Waldorf University in Albert Lea, Minn., for a weekend series beginning on Friday at 7 p.m.
