Mandan, N.D. – The No. 8 University of Jamestown ACHA Division-I men's hockey team had a night to forget In their season opener Thursday, losing 8-0 to the No. 11 University of Mary at the Starion Sports Complex.
The Jimmies drop to 0-1 while the Marauders get to 3-0 after beating No. 12 Grand Canyon University and Arizona State University two weekends prior.
Both teams had two shots on net early on until the Jimmies got a chance on a power play about five minutes in. However, a UJ penalty called 35 seconds into their power play led to some 4v4 action. Defending their own zone, a hooking call against the Jimmies made it 4v3, and then a brief 5v3 for UMary. Despite being outnumbered,
Brandon Weare made some nice saves, the Jimmies defense had a couple of blocked shots, and nothing extremely dangerous resulted from the player disadvantages.
About halfway through the first period, a cross ice pass through the slot in the Marauders zone left netminder Caleb Cross on his belly, but Jamestown missed a wide open net from the left side of the crease.
Two minutes later and the Marauders broke the scoreless tie. The Jimmies turned it over in the neutral zone, then a few swipes and misses from the UJ defensemen led to a 3v0. Weare made an effort to stop the a cross-crease pass, but to no avail and Isaac Flatley got UMary on the board with eight minutes left in the first period.
The Marauders were back on the power play with a few minutes left in the first stanza. Following a zone entry, Dain Sardelli flicked a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot. The shot bounced off the right post and rebounded right to Joe Gronholz who put it in immediately for a 2-0 UMary advantage with the power play goal.
A Marauders penalty gave Jamestown a man-advantage in the closing minutes, but the Jimmies could not get one to go. The first period ended with a 2-0 score with the home team leading both in goals and shots on goal 12-7.
UMary scored again a few minutes into the second period as the score was now 3-0, but the Jimmies got on the power play not longer after. Jamestown had a promising start to their 5v4, but after a clear attempt, the Marauders beat Jamestown down the ice and scored again off a rebound attempt on a wraparound shot to push their lead up to 4-0.
UMary scored four more times after that to take a crooked 8-0 advantage into the final 20 minutes. Thanks to a couple of power play opportunities, UJ had 11 shots on goal in the second frame, but the Marauders held a 28-18 edge for the game.
The Jimmies looked quite a bit better to open the third period. No goals were scored, but Jamestown had a couple of decent looks in transition off of odd man rushes before they drew a penalty behind the UMary net. However, the Jimmies power-play could not get it done once again.
Marcus Fritel, with around nine minutes left, had a wide open look in the low slot after a forced turnover, but his shot attempt went wide right.
Carter Johnson and
Jacob Thomas led a 2-on-1 the other way with three minutes remaining on the timer, though Thomas's shot missed as well.
Jamestown pressured heavily in the final few minutes, but while the shots on goal total increased, the number on the scoreboard that mattered did not. The Jimmies were defeated 8-0 in their season opener.
Shots on goal in the third period were won by the Jimmies 13-10 with both sides exceeding 30 for the game. The Marauders had 38 while UJ had 31 on the night. The Jimmies power play struggled at 0-for-6 and conceded a short-handed goal. UMary went 1-for-4.
Both Weare and
Kaden Rhyder made 15 saves in the effort.
Jamestown will have a rematch against the Marauders back at John Wilson Arena on Saturday, October 3 as the Jug Series continues. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
