Jimmies complete weekend sweep of Illinois

Jamestown, N.D. – The number five University of Jamestown ACHA D1 Men's Hockey team hosted the University of Illinois Fighting Illini this weekend. The Jimmies beat the Illini 5-1 on Friday and doubled their goals to beat them 10-2 on Saturday. 

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1

  • Darius Makse scored only 48 seconds into play, and Jordan Baranesky followed with a goal four minutes later. Brandon Weare had 13 saves in the first period to hold off Illinois scoring. 
  • Scoring came late in the second as Illinois scored their first and last goal 16:26 into the period. Kaelen Shelton extended the Jimmies lead back to two with assists from Baranesky and Keaton Cline to end the second period. 
  • Wyatt Johnson scored his first goal of the season and Brad Fortin added one to complete the Jimmies five-goal night. 
  • Zane MacDonald and Cline each had two assists on the night. 
  • The Jimmies outshot Illinois 48-34. 

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2

  • The Jimmies doubled their goals to 10 in game two, their highest of the season. Brad Fortin, Jacob Thomas, and Mario Decapite started it off for the Jimmies in the first. 
  • Illinois two goals came off of power plays in the first period. 
  • The Jimmies extended their lead to five in the second period. Carter Johnson had three goals to secure the hat trick, and Matthew Poole tagged on another. 
  • Alek Erichuk, Zane MacDonald, and Kaelan Shelton added the Jimmies eighth, ninth, and 10th goals. 
  • Brenden Vulcano and Matthew McIntrye each had two assists, and Darius Makse assisted each of the last period's three goals. 
  • The Jimmie defense cut Illinois shots in half from the first game, outshooting them 41-16.

FOR THE JIMMIES

  • Brandon Weare had 47 saves on the weekend. 
  • The Jimmies were 2-7 on power plays.   

FOR THE FIGHTING ILLINOIS

  • Nolan Woodring had 74 saves on the weekend. 
  • Illinois was 2-9 on power plays.

  • The Jimmies host Concordia-Moorhead for an exhibition game on Friday, October 25 at 7:00 PM.
