MANDAN, N.D. – The seventh-ranked University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team completed a successful weekend against 11th-ranked University of Mary, taking down the Marauders 2-1 on Saturday night at the Starion Sports Complex.
Fueled by two power-play goals and a stout performance between the pipes, the Jimmies improved their season record to 16-9-0-0.
Special teams proved to be the deciding factor in the contest. The Jimmies capitalized on two of their four power-play opportunities, while the penalty kill unit successfully negated the Marauders' lone man-advantage chance.
Jamestown opened the scoring early in the first period. At the 2:29 mark,
Carson Brown netted his 14th goal of the season on the power play, assisted by
Trey Stephenson. The goal set the tone for the Jimmies, who outshot the Marauders 16-15 in the second period and 39-32 for the game.
The eventual game-winner came midway through the second period. With UMary's Isaac Flatley in the box for roughing,
Ray Warrack scored at 14:04 to extend the lead to 2-0.
Matthew McIntyre and
Jacob Thomas were credited with the assists on Warrack's fifth goal of the campaign.
Goaltender
Brandon Weare was solid in net for Jamestown, stopping 31 of the 32 shots he faced to earn the victory. He held the Marauders scoreless for over 51 minutes until Dain Sardelli broke the shutout bid with an unassisted goal at 11:19 of the third period. Despite late pressure, Weare and the Jimmie defense held firm to preserve the one-goal lead. Across the ice, UMary netminder Caleb Cross made 37 saves on 39 shots in the loss.
Jamestown travels to Albert Lea, Minn., next Friday and Saturday for a weekend series against Waldorf University.
