Jimmies take fifth straight with sweep of Doane

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CRETE, Neb.-- The Jimmie softball team extended its winning streak to five games with a sweep of Doane University Friday evening.

Jamestown won the opener 8-5 in 11 innings, then completed the sweep with a 6-3 win in game two.

Game 1:
After being held to two runs through ten innings, the Jimmies erupted for six runs in the top of the 11th, then fought off a Tiger rally in the bottom of the inning.

Megan Neiles was the runner placed on second base to start the 11th, and Ally Battistoni doubled down the right field line one batter later to make it 3-2. Angie Chin reached on a bunt single and stole second to give UJ runners at second and third. Trinity Gregg's third hit of the game was a double to left field scoring Battistoni and Chin for a 5-2 lead. One out later, Maddie Spaeth singled in Gregg, then Abby Blair capped off the scoring with a two-run home run to center.

Back-to-back doubles and a fielding error helped the Tigers get three quick runs in the bottom of the 11th. Doane had runners at first and second with two outs, but Abby Blair was able to get the final hitter to hit into a force play for the last out.

Hailey Schaefer (4-1) pitched nine innings in relief and earned the win. She gave up four runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out five. Gregg finished 3-for-6 at the plate and scored three runs while Spaeth and Chin both had a pair of hits.

Game 2:
Mackenzie Lefebvre's three-run home run in the top of the first gave the Jimmies a quick 3-0 lead. Maddie Spaeth made it 4-0 with a single in the second, scoring Trinity Gregg.

Doane got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the third, and the score remained 4-1 until the top of the seventh. Spaeth and Skylar Thorpe both had run-scoring doubles as UJ put the Tigers down by five runs going into their final at-bat.

A fielding error and wild pitch by the Jimmies in the bottom of the seventh led to two runs for Doane, but Abby Blair was able to end the threat by getting the final two hitters on ground ball outs.

Gregg, Spaeth, and Samarah Martinez all had two hits for Jamestown, who ended with 24 hits in the two games. Blair (9-4) pitched a complete game, giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits.
