Jimmies win twice on Wednesday

TUCSON, Ariz.-- The University of Jamestown softball team won both of its games on Wednesday at the Tucson Invitational Games, defeating Presentation (S.D.) College 9-5, and No. 19 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) 3-2.

The win against Presentation snapped a five-game losing streak for the Jimmies, who lost three games on Monday.

UJ 9, Presentation 5

The Jimmies made it 16 straight wins against former conference rivals Presentation, handing the Saints a 9-5 loss Wednesday morning.

PC scored three runs in the bottom of the first, but Jamestown came back with six of their own in the top of the second. With the bases loaded and one out, Gentrey Turin (SO/Sandy, Ore.) singled in Katie Merchant (JR/South Haven, Minn.) for the first run. Ally Battistoni (FR/Elizabeth, Colo.) delivered a two-run single one out later to make it 3-3, then Santina Zito (JR/Boise, Idaho) followed with a two-run double to make it 5-3. Zito scored on a passed ball for the final UJ run of the inning.

The score stayed 6-3 until the bottom of the fourth, when the Saints scored twice to cut the Jimmies' lead to one run.

Jamestown tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Zito, a sacrifice fly by Megan Neiles (SO/Winnipeg, MB), and an RBI single by Sunny Halsey (FR/Honolulu, Hawaii).

Kat Miska (SR/Pequot Lakes, Minn.) went the distance in the circle, striking out 11 and allowing just two earned runs on seven hits.

Battistoni and Zito both had mutiple hits for UJ, which finished with 11 hits total.

UJ 3, Olivet Nazarene 2

LaLa Romero (FR/Surprise, Ariz.)'s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh was the game-winner as the Jimmies avenged a 4-0 loss earlier in the week to the Tigers.

Skylar Thorpe (FR/Petaluma, Calif.) led off the seventh with a single, stole second base, then moved to third on a single by Kayla Quintanilla (FR/Moreno Valley, Calif.). Romero then took a 3-1 pitch into left field, allowing Thorpe to score with the winning run.

Santina Zito drove in Romero with the Jimmies' first run in the bottom of the first, then Gentrey Turin scored on a error in the bottom of the third to give UJ a 2-0 lead.

ONU scored once in both the sixth and seventh innings, tying up the game and setting the stage for Jamestown to get the walkoff win.

Quintanilla had two hits to lead the Jimmies. Katie Merchant pitched all seven innings, scattering 11 hits and striking out four.

Jamestown (10-8) plays Saint Francis (Ill.) at 1:15 p.m. and Roosevelt (Ill.) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
