ABERDEEN, S.D.-- After managing just one run on four hits in 46 at bats yesterday, the Jimmie softball team's bats came alive against the University of Minnesota-Crookston in a 10-3 victory Sunday.
Jamestown sent 13 batters to the plate in a nine-run first inning as Kelly Halverson (SO/Surrey, BC) and Brittany Rheault (JR/West Fargo, ND) each had 2-RBI doubles, while Kaitlyn Combo (SO/Yuba City, CA), Emma Keller (JR/Poulsbo, WA), Mikayla Frost (FR/Melba, ID), and Tifani Schorzman (JR/Coeur d'Alene, ID) all drove in runs. Halverson also added an RBI single in her second at-bat of the inning.
Minnesota-Crookston countered with two runs in the top of the second and another in the fourth to make the score 9-3, but UJ added another run in their half of the fourth on an RBI single from Schorzman.
Rheault (1-1) picked up her first win of the season, allowing three runs on six hits in four innings of work. She walked two and struck out five. Callie Wemple (FR/Milford, CA) made her Jimmie debut, pitching a scorless fifth inning and allowing one hit. Keller tossed the final two innings and surrendered one hit.
Keller finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Schorzman and Dunnigan both were 2-for-3, and Halverson finished with two hits in four trips to the plate. She and Frost also scored twice.
Jozie Garner and Hailey Fitzpatrick had two hits a piece for the Golden Eagles. Kassidy Klaphake (0-1) got just two outs, allowing nine runs, eight of which were earned, on eight hits and one walk. Mikayla Jones finished the final 5 1/3 innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits, striking out four.
In Sunday's second game, the Jimmies scored one in the top of the first against Southwest Minnesota State. Mikayla Frost singled with one out and scored on Kelly Halverson's double.
The Mustangs then scored in their half of the first, added two in the second and one in the third to lead 4-1 after four innings.
Jamestown scored four times in the top of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Miriah Yoder (SO/Devils Lake, ND) scored on a fielder's choice. Emma Keller singled and Mikayla Frost, who reached on the fielder's choice, both came home on a single by Kelly Halverson. Halverson came around on a single to left by Kaitlyn Combo for the fourth and final run of the inning.
Taylor Koloc connected for a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead for the Mustangs at 6-5.
Not to be outdone, the Jimmies battled back for the tying run in the top of the sixth. Samm Hamilton (FR/Boise, ID) led off with a triple to right field and scored on Meghan Ramage (SO/Grand Forks, ND)'s single.
Southwest Minnesota State strung three hits and a hit batter to bring in the go-ahead and insurance runs in the bottom half.
Brittany Rheault reached on a two-out single in the top of the seventh off reliever Alex O'Connor, but O'Connor got the final out to earn the save.
Hanna Dunnigan (SR/Regina, SK) (0-2) took the loss for Jamestown. She worked 6 innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits, walking one and striking out eight.
Megan Cull pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter Anthena Golling for the win. Cull gave up two runs on three hits, striking out two. Golling went 4 1/3 innings, surrendering seven hits and four runs. She struck out three. O'Connor gave up two hits in her one inning of work.
UJ racked up 12 hits, with Halverson, Combo, Hamilton, and Yoder getting two each. Koloc and Abbie Decker had three hits each for the Mustangs.
Jamestown will be at the Presentation Dome again next weekend with two games each on Saturday and Sunday.
