Jimmies Rally to Sweep Comets

The Jimmies had to wait a few days to play Mayville State, but it was worth it.

Jamestown College improved to 18-13 overall and 5-1 in the DAC with a road sweep of the Comets in Portland, N.D.

They never trailed en route to winning Game 1 6-3 and then rallied late to take the nightcap, 11-9.

The Jimmies, 9-1 in their last 10 games, are right back at it today when they travel to Valley City to face the Vikings

"We're playing pretty well right now, it's good to see," said coach Kevin Gall. "It was a total team effort today. We used a lot of people and somehow found a way to get it done."

The familiar combination of Jessica Lees and Kate Johnson carried the Jimmies to the Game 1 win.

Lees fired another complete game with the only blemish a 3-run bottom of the fifth by the Comets.

Otherwise, the senior from Arcola, Saskatchewan, allowed nothing en route to her 10th win of the season. Lees allowed five hits in all, walked three and struck out three.

"(Lees) has been the girl we go to when it comes to who we hand the ball to in the tough games," Gall said. "She's had to log some innings against really good teams and she's battled and it's helped her become a better pitcher."

The Jimmies led 1-0 into the top of the fifth when Johnson delivered the decisive blow.

With Celene Eccles and Kelsie Jensen aboard, Johnson clubbed a 3-run home run to make it 5-1 Jimmies. Heather Haegele started the 4-run uprising with a leadoff triple.

Johnson, a junior from Victoria, British Columbia, finished 2-for-3 with 5 RBIs and a walk. Haegele added two hits. Eccles and Jensen scored twice.

JC 11, MSU 9

The Jimmies rallied to complete the sweep.

They scored two runs two tie it in the sixth and then went ahead with two more in the seventh.

Rachel Ivelia had a big game for the Jimmies, going 3-for-4 with a pair of 2-run home runs - one in the first inning and another in the fifth.

The Jimmies banged out 14 hits. Nine players had at least one hit. Allison Roper was 3-for-4 out of the 9-hole. Haegele and Johnson each had two hits apiece.

"A lot of girls kind of chipped in with the bats today in both games," Gall said. "That always helps when you don't have to rely on just one or two players. When everybody hits you got a lot better chance of putting some runs on the board."

D.J. Johnson earned the win in relief to improve to 7-0. Lees got the final three outs to nail down her second save.
