Vikings Sweep Jimmies

Jamestown College's woes on the softball diamond continued in Valley City on Wednesday.

After picking up head coach Kevin Gall's 300th career win against Valley City State University in Jamestown on Monday, the Vikings stormed back at home to sweep the Jimmies 9-1, 6-2.

The Jimmies (14-26, 6-10 DAC) have now lost 10 of their last 12 games, but they'll try to right the ship today with a pair of contests in Dickinson against the No. 2 team in the Dakota Athletic Conference, the Dickinson State Blue Hawks.

The Vikings improved to 18-14 overall and 12-5 in the DAC with the pair of victories over the Jimmies.

VCSU 9, Jimmies 1

It's tough to start a game any hotter than the Vikings kicked off their opening five-inning contest against Jamestown College.

The Vikings plated eight of their nine runs in the first inning, and the Jimmies could only muster three total hits as VCSU rolled.

"It was not the way you want to start a game," Gall said. "Maybe we were a little too aggressive to begin with. Valley ended up scoring eight in the first, and it's tough to answer after that.

"They did hit a few balls hard, but they also found some holes and had one roll up the middle. It was just one of those deals."

Jamestown College starting pitcher Jessica Lees lasted just a third of an inning, as she was tagged with seven earned runs on five base hits in the first.

On the other side of the coin, Valley City State's Katie McBride all but shut the Jimmies down, allowing just three hits, while striking out four and walking none.

One of McBride's lone mistakes was a solo shot she gave up to the Jimmies' Kelsie Jensen in the top of the fifth inning, which accounted for Jamestown College's only run of the game.

VCSU 6, Jimmies 2

Jamestown College's bats fared better in the seven-inning nightcap, but a four-run bottom of the sixth by the Vikings broke up a 2-2 tie and lifted Valley City State to the sweep.

The sixth inning got off to a wild start for the Jimmies in the field. With a VCSU runner on first, a ball that got hit into the left-center gap got stuck under the fence, and once it was dug out by the Jimmies an errant throw to second base sent the ball rolling into right field.

The error set the table for the Vikings' big inning.

"Those are the kind of errors we've been making all year to let the go-ahead run come in, and we have to absolutely stop doing that," Gall said. "We've just got to make the right play and keep ourselves in the game. After that they hit back-to-back doubles and we couldn't answer in the bottom half."

Jamestown College shortstop Amy Shadinger had a pair of hits and belted a solo home run in the game. Left-fielder Amber Orizotti also went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Jimmies as JC posted six hits in the game.

The Jimmies' Emily Snow pitched all six innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking one.

"The Vikings had a good day, but at least we made them earn it a little more in the second game," Gall said. "I thought Emily Snow pitched pretty well and all-and-all I thought she gave us a chance to win."

Valley City State's Krystal Hathaway not only notched her team the victory from inside the pitching circle, but she also blasted a solo home run batting cleanup from the Vikings. Hathaway allowed two earned runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking a pair.

The Jimmies will try to get back on track today in Dickinson.

"I think it's just a mental state of mind for us. We're kind of standing around waiting for bad things to happen instead of getting after it and making pitches and getting outs," Gall said. "Somebody said once that you're not as bad as you think you are when you're losing, and you're not as good as you think you are when you're winning.

"In my mind, we just need to make the decision that we are going to finish games and get the job done on the mound."
