Her teammates simply call her "H" when she approaches the plate. One reason being because of her name and the other because of the results she consistently gets from the leadoff spot - hits.
Heather Haegele went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Jimmies to an opening-game 11-2 five-inning victory over Mayville State on Wednesday at McElroy Park. The only at-bat she didn't record a hit was still a productive one as she pushed in a run and eventually crossed the plate herself for the third time in the game.
"I'm just trying to see as many pitches as possible and figure out the pitcher," said Haegele, a native of Kalispell, Mont. "I just try to be patient and look for my pitch."
The Jimmies, however, failed to follow up in the nightcap as the Comets salvaged a split with a 10-4 win to end the series.
Mayville State, which was originally scheduled to host Wednesday's twinbill, broke a 4-all tie by scoring a combined six runs on six hits in the fifth and sixth innings.
"We've got to do a better job of pitching," said Jamestown College coach Kevin Gall. "Hopefully we'll learn from it and get them when it counts, in the tournament."
Jamestown College, which took the season series 3-1 after sweeping the Comets on Monday in Jamestown, is back at it today on the road for a nonconference doubleheader with Division II University of Mary.
"Hopefully we can get two (from Mary), and then we're going to have to prepare for Dickinson (Saturday and Sunday)," Haegele said.
The junior centerfielder got the Jimmies (13-17 overall, 5-3 Dakota Athletic Conference) rolling early in Wednesday's first game by driving a double to right-center in the third inning to put Jamestown College up 2-0.
Kirstin Enos scored earlier in the inning after a leadoff double.
Celene Eccles connected on the third double of the inning to send Haegele home from second, while Kelsie Jensen drove in Eccles with a single up the left side.
Amy Shadinger drove in the fifth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly before Mayville State starting pitcher Valea Crowder was able to escape the inning with a groundout.
"We saw her (Crowder) the past two games and I really liked her," said Haegele. "I was just patient and waited for my pitch."
Steph Bolt started in the circle for the Jimmies and pitched three near-perfect innings to help her pick up her second straight victory over the Comets. The hard-throwing right-hander gave up two runs in the fourth but followed up with a zero in the fifth to seal the deal. Bolt (6-7) allowed five hits and four walks, while fanning four in her complete-game effort.
"Steph Bolt kind of sets the tone," Gall said. "She can get us out of some trouble with a strikeout here or there. I thought she pitched really well."
Crowder, who suffered the loss, went 3 1-3 innings before being replaced by junior Alexis Franco.
Haegele ended Crowder's day with her second double of the game in the third inning. The hit also resulted in her second RBI and eventually led to her second run scored.
"Our whole lineup came through this game," Haegele said. "We were able to score a lot of runs."
Enos, who drove in a run to start the four-run fifth inning, went 2-for 3 with three runs scored, two doubles and an RBI, while Shadinger went 2-for-2 with one RBI.
"Kirstin Enos has been a workhorse for us," said Gall. "It was good to see her rip a couple doubles."
The offense carried over into the first inning of Game 2, but from there on the hits didn't come as easy for the Jimmies.
After starting the second game with two runs on four base hits, Mayville State (9-15 overall, 5-3 DAC) held the Jimmies to just five hits and two runs the rest of the way.
"I thought we hit plenty of hard balls, they just fielded them all," said Gall. "Over the long haul, I hope that our girls can get some runs together to give us a chance."
The Comets, on the other hand, heated up from the plate in the fifth and sixth innings to put an end to the three-game losing streak they had heading into the game.
Mayville State's first three batters in the fifth inning reached safely after a pair of hits and a walk, and Angelique Macias came through with a sacrifice fly to break a 4-all tie.
"She killed us all day," said Gall of Macias. "From what my catcher (Enos) is telling me, they weren't even strikes. That tells you how good of a hitter she is."
Krista Hendricks and Katie Corbin followed up with back-to-back RBI singles to extend the Comets' lead to 7-4 before the Jimmies could get out of the inning.
Jamestown College starter Jessica Lees was credited with all seven runs after being relieved in the fifth with the bases loaded.
Emily Snow finished the inning, but not before Macias, Hendricks and Corbin were able to do their damage.
Macias, who drove in another run in the sixth, finished 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and two RBIs. Corbin went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Elizabeth Best-Still went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Jamestown College's biggest inning came in the first when Eccles drove in Haegele to start the game and Erica Rush scored on a wild pitch to put the Jimmies up 2-0.
Franco started for the Comets but was replaced in the second by Ashley VandeVeen, who held the Jimmies to just two runs the rest of the way. VandeVeen, a junior transfer, gave up just five hits and one walk to earn the win.
