Jimmies Topple Trojans

Jamestown College is a prolific three-point shooting team.

Saturday night, they were cold from downtown, but they found a way around it to finish the regular season with a conference road win.

The Jimmies closed out a 19-7 regular season with a 74-60 win over Dakota State in Madison, S.D.

After winning two straight on the road, the Jimmies will open the Dakota Athletic Conference tournament at home Wednesday night against Dickinson State at 5:30 p.m., a team the Jimmies swept during the regular season, but both were close.

"Dickinson is a very explosive team. A very scary team," JC women's coach Greg Ulland said. "They're good, but to get where we want to go, you're going to have to beat good teams. So we have to be ready."

The Trojans (2-12, 6-2) hung with the Jimmies Saturday night, but JC put the clamps on in the second half, allowing just 26 points over the final 20 minutes.

"Defensively, we played well, especially in the second half," Ulland said. "We didn't shoot the ball very well, but I thought we were patient and efficient offensively. But we can and will have to shoot better on Wednesday."

The Jimmies made just two of their 12 three-point attempts, but made 22 of 40 inside the arc.

Dakota State led 32-29 late in the second half, but the Jimmies (9-5, 19-7) scored 10 of the last 15 points going into the break and then pushed the lead over 10 midway through the second half where it stayed the rest of the night.

"(Dakota State) is not an easy place to win," Ulland said. "We struggled at times, but the girls kept working through it and the end result was pretty nice."

Hannah Steele poured in 20 points to lead five Jimmies in double figures. Amber Ramlo had 12 points and eight rebounds and Casey Geffre added 10. The bench was good again, too. Ulland liked freshman Carly Jensen's defensive effort and she scored 11 points, including making all eight of her free-throw attempts. Kayla Roemmich was in double figures off the bench for the second straight game with 10 points.

They also forced Dakota State into 27 turnovers.

The Jimmies were picked seventh in the preseason coaches' poll, but here they are with a home playoff game Wednesday in a season where they've beaten every team in the conference but one - Minot State, which ended up getting the No. 3 seed over the Jimmies thanks to the 2-0 head-to-head sweep.

Dickinson State (7-7, 15-12) is a tough match-up, too. The Jimmies won here 69-66 Dec. 2, and 78-72 there Jan. 30. But that's the way it should be this time of year, Ulland said.

"We're way beyond cupcake stage," he said. "Realistically now, every game could be your last game. We wanted big games in February and now we got them."
