JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The University of Jamestown women's basketball team ran into a dynamic shooting display on Friday night, falling 83-50 to Concordia-St. Paul at Harold Newman Arena.
The visiting Golden Bears connected on 14 three-pointers at a 46.7 percent clip, creating a deficit the Jimmies (4-11, 2-9 NSIC) could not overcome despite a spirited fourth-quarter effort.
Jamestown found itself trailing early after Concordia-St. Paul (10-6, 6-5 NSIC) opened the game with a 20-point first quarter. The offense struggled to find a rhythm in the first half, and the Jimmies faced a 46-14 disadvantage at the break.
However, UJ refused to go away quietly. The team played its best basketball in the final frame, outscoring the Golden Bears 21-11 over the final 10 minutes. The Jimmie defense held CSP to just 20 percent shooting (3-of-15) in the fourth quarter while finding their own stroke at the free-throw line.
Allie Berns paced the UJ offense with nine points on 3-of-11 shooting and added two rebounds. Emily Kurkowski provided a spark off the bench, knocking down two three-pointers en route to eight points.
Sophomore Julia Thoms made the most of her minutes, tallying seven points and grabbing three rebounds. In the paint, Jessika Lofstrom battled for a team-high six rebounds and chipped in six points.
One of the bright spots for Jamestown was their efficiency at the charity stripe. The Jimmies shot an impressive 92.9 percent (13-of-14) from the line, significantly better than CSP's 62.5 percent. The Jimmie reserves were active, contributing 25 points to the total.
The Jimmies return to the court on Saturday, hosting Winona State University at 5:00 p.m.
