Beavers pull away late to defeat Jimmies

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The tenth-ranked University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 women's hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 3 Minot State University Friday evening at John L. Wilson Arena.

The Beavers established an early lead at 5:55 of the first period when Journey Miller capitalized on the power play, assisted by Cameron Schmidt. The visitors extended their advantage in the second period with goals from Payton Lang at 5:48 and Kaitlyn Snyder at 7:01. Lang's goal was set up by Maddie Beek and Paige Crossley, while Olivia Opheim assisted on Snyder's tally.

UJ generated some momentum early in the third period. Emma Durand found the back of the net on the power play at the 1:42 mark, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Samantha Beaulac provided the assist on Durand's tenth goal of the season.

However, Minot State sealed the victory with two late third-period goals. Erica Fijala scored at 15:44, and Kinley Brassard added another at 19:35, with Miller picking up assists on both plays to finish a three-point night.

Goaltender Maddie Sylvestre went the distance in net for Jamestown, making 38 saves as Minot State outshot the Jimmies 43-30. Jillian Ackerman stopped 29 of 30 shots to earn the win for Minot State.

On special teams, Jamestown finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while Minot State efficiently converted on their only man-advantage opportunity of the game.

The two teams return to the ice to finish their weekend series on Saturday at 5 p.m.
