Fremont, Neb. - Paige Zimiga scored her first goal of the season, but the University of Jamestown ACHA women's Division-I hockey team fell 5-1 to the reigning National Champions, Midland University, Thursday night at the Sidner Ice Arena. Â
UJ is still searching for its first win after the gauntlet of an early schedule has led them to begin 0-3. The Warriors improve to 4-0 with their home victory. Â
Â
The Jimmies had an early crack on a power play, but the Warriors kept the puck in the Jamestown zone for most of the two minutes. Things looked dangerous on a couple of occassions, but Maddie Sylvestre made two great saves on fantastic looks by Midland. Â
With 11:35 left to play, the Warriors made a turnover in the neutral zone while also changing defensemen. This led to an amazing look with lots of open ice on the right wing by Mallory Docktor, though her shot clanked off the post and goaltender Brynn Knaus fell on top of it for the stoppage in play. Â
Late in the first period, the Warriors were called for two penalties within 1:11 of each other, leading to a brief 5v3 for UJ. The Jimmies had a few shots on goal in their two-skater advantage, though nothing too dangerous as these shots were all a distance from the net. Â
The Jimmies were called for their first penalty with 2:19 left to play, but the defense got some zone clears and the Sylvestre added to her save total with Jamestown's first penalty kill a success. Â
The first 20 minutes wrapped up with the two WMCH schools locked in a scoreless tie though the Warriors held a 16-5 edge in shots on goal. Â
Midland got its first goal less than two minutes into the second period. A shot from the sideboards on the left wing was redirected by Ashlyn Kuffler right in front of the crease as she broke the ice to put Midland up 1-0. Â
Jamestown was called for its second penalty a couple minutes after the Warriors first goal, and this time, they were not able to kill it off. A centering pass from behind the net by Kuffler found the stick of Victoria Campbell opposite site for the power play, insurance goal, and a 2-0 Midland advantage. Â
The home team worked their way to a 3-0 lead, but Jamestown got one goal closer on a power play chance with a couple minutes to left in the second period. Right off the opening faceoff on the man-advantage for the Jimmies, Morgan Celley won the faceoff, then Logan Eisner found Paige Zimiga out near the blue line. The sophomore defenseman from Rapid City fired a shot that cairned off the left post and into the back of the net to make the score 3-1. Â
The second period concluded with the score at 3-1 and the Jimmies trailing shots on net 32-11 with 20 minutes to play. Â
Midland was called for two overlapping penalties again to begin the third period, but the Jimmies did not capitalize, despite a few shots on goal shots in this extended power play. Â
Jamestown had a lot more sustained pressure in the first 10 minutes of the third period, much more so than the previous two periods as they were able to get some pucks into the slot for some scoring chances. However, just over halfway through the period, a Jimmies shot from the point was blocked and then cleared up to Campbell who was all alone skating up the center of the ice resulting in a goal on the breakaway. Â
Midland scored one more time in the period to make it 5-1, then the Jimmies did not have the same offensive pressure the rest of the game like they did earlier in the period as they fell by a four-goal margin in their first game of the week in Fremont. Â
Â
Zimiga notched her first goal of the season while Celley got her first assist on the year. The freshman Eisner earned her first ACHA point with her apple on Zimiga's goal. Sylvestre made 35 saves on 40 shots faced in the loss. Â
Â
Jamestown only lost shots on goal 8-7 in the third period, though total shots finished 40-18 for the entire contest. The Jimmies were 1-for-8 on the power play while the Warriors cashed in on one of their two opportunities.  Â
Â
UJ will be right back at it tomorrow, October 9 when they play a Friday afternoon neutral-site game against Adrian College in Fremont at 3 p.m. Â
