Heartbreak at the Horn: Late Goal Sinks Jimmies in 2-1 Loss to Minot State

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 women's hockey team suffered a crushing 2-1 defeat to Minot State University Friday night at John L. Wilson Arena, surrendering the game-winning goal with just one second remaining in regulation.

Despite a heroic 40-save performance from goaltender Maddie Sylvestre, the Jimmies could not hold off a relentless Minot State offensive attack in the third period.
Jamestown opened the scoring midway through the first period. Lana Cipriano found the back of the net unassisted at the 11:47 mark, giving the Jimmies an early 1-0 advantage. Although being outshot 16-2 in the opening frame, Jamestown's defense and Sylvestre held strong to take the lead into the first intermission.

After a scoreless second period where the Jimmies generated eight shots on goal to Minot State's 13, UJ maintained their narrow 1-0 edge heading into the final 20 minutes of play.

MSU finally broke through the Jamestown defense in the third period. Jade Olszewski tied the game at 1-1 at the 12:41 mark, with assists credited to Erica Fijala and Karlyn Gudz.

As the clock wound down and the game appeared destined for overtime, the Beavers stunned the home crowd as Kinley Brassard scored the game-winning goal at 19:59—just 1.2 seconds before the final buzzer—assisted by Abby Tallman and Paige Crossley.

Minot State heavily outshot Jamestown 42-16 in the contest. Both teams were held scoreless on special teams, with the Jimmies finishing 0-for-4 on the power play and the Beavers going 0-for-1.

Jillian Ackerman earned the win in net for Minot State, stopping 15 of the 16 shots she faced.

The two teams return to the ice Saturday afternoon for a 3:00 PM puck drop at John L. Wilson Arena.
