Jimmies fall in opening game of WMCH Showcase

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The 10th-ranked University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 women's hockey team faced a tough road test on Thursday, falling 5-1 to No. 2 Midland University in the WMCH Showcase at the Centene Community Ice Center.

Despite a competitive first period and a power-play goal from Emma Durand, the Jimmies could not overcome a balanced Midland attack that saw four different players find the back of the net.

The Warriors opened the scoring at 13:23 of the first period when Taylor Bell netted her 13th goal of the season. UJ responded quickly, capitalizing on a power-play opportunity. Durand struck for her sixth goal of the year at 15:48, assisted by Mikaela Nimetz, to level the score at 1-1.

The tie was brief, however, as Midland regained the lead late in the opening frame. Molly McMurrich scored the eventual game-winner at 17:58, and Jordan Bell added another marker with just over a minute remaining in the period (18:54) to give the Warriors a 3-1 advantage at the intermission.

Midland extended their lead in the second period with a shorthanded goal from Davanna Ditto at 10:54. Kennedy Wood capped the scoring with an unassisted goal early in the third period (5:23).

The Warriors held a 34-29 advantage in shots. Jamestown went 1-for-5 on the power play, while their penalty kill unit was perfect, stopping all four Midland opportunities.

Lilah Drew started in net for Jamestown, making 11 saves in the first period. Maddie Sylvestre played the final 40 minutes, turning aside 18 of 20 shots.

The Jimmies face No. 6 Maryville University on Friday at 4 p.m.
