JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The University of Jamestown women's hockey team battled hard but ultimately fell to Midland University 2-1 in a tightly contested game on Saturday afternoon at John L. Wilson Arena.
A late third-period goal by
Jayden Carels brought the Jimmies within one, but they were unable to find the equalizer in the final minutes.
Midland opened the scoring at the 7:27 mark of the first period as Darbi Poole scored her third goal of the season, assisted by Brynn Tosh. The Warriors held on to the 1-0 lead through two periods of scoreless, defensive hockey, then extended their lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal from Victoria Campbell at the 6:12 mark of the third period.
Jamestown finally broke through just under a minute later, as
Jayden Carels scored her first goal of the season, with
Bethany Wielgosh picking up the assist, cutting the lead to 2-1 with a little under 13 minutes to play. The Jimmies pressed for the tying goal in the final minutes, but the Midland defense held strong to secure the victory.
Midland outshot Jamestown 38-15 for the game, but Jimmie goaltender
Maddie Sylvestre kept her team in the game, making 36 saves. Natalie Rampton made 14 saves for the Warriors to earn the win.
Both teams' penalty kill units were perfect on the day. The Jimmies successfully killed off the lone Midland power play, while the Warriors thwarted both of Jamestown's power-play opportunities.
The Jimmies continue their homestand on Thursday when they welcome McKendree University to John L. Wilson Arena at 7 p.m.
