No. 6 Jimmies take down second-ranked Beavers in shootout

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – In a dramatic mid-week showdown at Wilson Arena, the sixth-ranked University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team toppled No. 2 Minot State University 4-3 in a shootout Wednesday night.

Brandon Weare was the anchor for Jamestown (12-8-0-0), delivering a heroic 46-save performance to stifle a potent Minot State offense that fired 49 shots on goal. The victory hands Minot State (14-1-1-1) just their third loss of the season.

UJ wasted no time delighting the home crowd, storming out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Griffin Bourassa opened the scoring just 1:41 into the contest, netting his second goal of the season off assists from Jordan Baranesky and Kole Christensson.

Five minutes later, Brad Fortin doubled the lead, burying a feed from Kaelan Shelton at the 6:06 mark. The Beavers managed to stop the bleeding late in the frame when Eric Krywy scored his first of the year at 14:42, sending the teams into the first intermission with Jamestown leading 2-1.

The Jimmies restored their two-goal cushion early in the second period. Fortin struck for his second goal of the night—and 11th of the season—at 4:57, assisted by Marcus Fritel, making it 3-1.

However, the Beavers' special teams began to chip away at the deficit. Joey Moffatt converted on a power play at 8:07, set up by Logan Rands and Jay Buchholz, to pull Minot State within one at 3-2.

MSU found the equalizer midway through the third period, again capitalizing with the man advantage. Buchholz knotted the game at 3-3 with a power-play marker at 9:51, assisted by Matthew Yakubowski and Moffatt.

Despite being outshot 18-9 in the third period and overtime session, the Jimmies' defense held firm to force a shootout.

In the shootout, Jamestown was flawless. Carson Brown scored to put the Jimmies ahead, and Brad Fortin followed up with another goal. Weare denied both Sheldin Howard and Buchholz on the Minot State side, securing the 4-3 victory (2-0 in the shootout).

UJ is back on the ice Thursday, hosting No. 10 University of Mary at 7 p.m.
