Jimmies secure two runner-up finishes, five place winners at Beaver Bash Open

MINOT, N.D. – The University of Jamestown women's wrestling team delivered a competitive performance at the Beaver Bash Open Saturday afternoon, highlighted by two individual runner-up finishes and five wrestlers placing in the top four of their respective weight classes.

COMPLETE RESULTS

Leading the charge for the Jimmies were Emily Novak (180) and Celia Jaeger (207), who both navigated their brackets to reach the championship bouts.

At 180 pounds, Novak was dominant in the early rounds on her way to a second-place finish. After receiving an opening-round bye, Novak secured a fall over Minot State's Madilyn Schuck in 2:12 during the quarterfinals. She continued her aggressive streak in the semifinals, pinning Nina Sandoval in just 57 seconds to punch her ticket to the finals. Novak ultimately fell by fall to Minot State's Lillian Garrett in the first-place match.

Jaeger mirrored that success at 207 pounds, also bringing home second place. Jaeger made quick work of her quarterfinal opponent, pinning Dakota Wesleyan's Kaitlin Gay in just 27 seconds. In the semifinals, she earned a hard-fought 12-5 decision over Minot State's Dahlia Silva. Jaeger's run ended in the finals against Zoe Adam of Sioux Falls, who won by technical fall.

Three Jimmies battled through the backside of the brackets to claim fourth-place finishes:

  • Leah Willard (160): Willard started strong with back-to-back victories, winning by technical fall (10-0) in the first round and pinning Sioux Falls' Aliyah Villarreal in 31 seconds in the quarterfinals. After a semifinal loss, she bounced back to pin Taebyn Tulp of University of Saskatchewan in the consolation semis. She dropped a tight 3-2 decision in the third-place match to finish fourth.

  • Kiera Hagman (124): After winning her opener and falling in the quarterfinals, Hagman mounted a comeback in the consolation bracket. She secured consecutive falls over opponents from Chadron State and Minot State, followed by an injury default victory to reach the third-place match. Hagman placed fourth after a loss to Dickinson State's Birta McCaskill.

  • Nora Houglum (131): Houglum showed tremendous resilience after dropping her opening match. She rallied to win three straight consolation matches, including a 3-2 decision over Minot State's Keela Kary and a fast 33-second pin over Abby Wolff of Saskatchewan. She added a 5-4 decision win in the consolation semis before falling in the third-place match to finish fourth.

The Jimmies return to the mat on Saturday, January 10 for the Chadron State College Open in Chadron, Neb., beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT/9:00 a.m. MT.
