JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 women's hockey team faced a tough outing Friday afternoon at the John L. Wilson Arena, falling 4-0 to the visiting McKendree University Bearcats.
The Jimmies kept the game close for two periods, but McKendree's offense pulled away in the third to secure the victory.
Jamestown's defense and goaltender Maddie Sylvestre were tested early, with McKendree registering nine shots in the first period. The Bearcats managed to break through late in the frame at 15:58 with an even-strength goal from Olivia Imperato.
The second period proved to be a defensive battle, with both teams playing disciplined hockey. McKendree held a slight advantage in shots (8-3), but Sylvestre turned away every attempt, keeping the deficit at a manageable 1-0 heading into the final period.
The third period saw McKendree widen their lead with three goals. Larisa Gorgevska-Sharpe scored the insurance goal at 5:21, followed by an unassisted marker from Brittney Kambeitz at 9:07. The Bearcats capped their scoring with a power-play goal late in the game at 18:33.
Sylvestre stopped 22 of 26 shots faced over the full 60 minutes of action.
Despite having five power-play opportunities throughout the contest, including a five-on-three advantage, the Jimmies were unable to capitalize, finishing 0-for-5 on the power play.
The Jimmies will return to the ice on Thursday, October 9 at John L. Wilson Arena against the D2 University of Jamestown Jimmies team. Face-off is set for 7 p.m.
