Jimmies avenge home loss with overtime win at Minot State

MINOT, N.D. - Brad Fortin scored at 3:18 of overtime to give the sixth-ranked University of Jamestown Jimmies ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team a dramatic 4-3 victory over the No. 3 Minot State University Beavers on Saturday night at Maysa Arena. The back-and-forth contest saw the Jimmies build an early lead, only to have the Beavers storm back in the third period to force the extra frame.

Jamestown controlled the early stages of the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Carter Johnson, his second of the season. Johnson struck again in the second period, finding the back of the net at 14:11 to give the Jimmies a 2-0 advantage heading into the final period of regulation.

The third period saw a flurry of goals from both teams. Minot State's Colby Joseph cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 7:31 mark. However, Jamestown responded swiftly, with Tanner Freed scoring at 9:04, assisted by Matthew McIntyre and Tyler Lindal, to push the Jimmies' lead to 3-1. The Beavers mounted a fierce comeback late in the period, scoring two power-play goals. Christian Kadolph scored at 11:37, and Jay Buchholz tied the game at 17:06, sending the contest into overtime.

In the extra period, Fortin delivered his first game-winner of the season, and 10th of his career, with assists from Sully Ross and Jordan Baranesky to give the Jimmies the hard-fought road victory in front of a crowd of 525.

Minot State outshot Jamestown 31-25. Jimmies goaltender Brandon Weare made 28 saves to earn the win, while Will Dyke took the overtime loss for the Beavers, stopping 21 of 25 shots.

The Jimmies travel to O'Fallon, Ill., to face McKendree University for games on Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October 18.
