Men's volleyball finishes undefeated conference season with two wins Saturday

The ninth-ranked University of Jamestown men's volleyball team closed out an undefeated GPAC regular season with a pair of sweeps Saturday at Harold Newman Arena. The Jimmies beat Ottawa (Kan.) and Central Christian College (Kan.) by 3-0 scores to finish 10-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After taking an early 11-6 lead, the Jimmies saw the Braves use a 7-2 run to tie the score at 13-13.
  • The teams traded points until UJ held a brief 18-16 edge, then Ottawa would tie the score again at 20-20.
  • Back-to-back kills by Caylor Cox gave Jamestown a two-point lead, and the Jimmies closed out the set after a kill by Tomasz Swiderski and an Ottawa attack error.
  • Eleven of the first 12 points in set two went to UJ, and the Jimmies never looked back.
  • Donte Jennings started a 5-0 run with a kill, and Camden Steckler's kill to close the run stretched the lead to 17-3.
  • Jamestown finished with six of the last seven points and took a 2-0 match lead.
  • In the finale, UJ held an 11-10 advantage, then created some separation by taking six of the next seven points.
  • Ottawa got no closer than five the rest of the way, and Caydann Cox finished the match with a kill on an assist from Caylor Cox.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A balanced offensive attack helped Jamestown defeat Central Christian College in straight sets.
  • Five players had at least four kills, and four players recorded assists as the Jimmies outhit the Tigers .343 to (-.172).
  • Holding a slim 5-3 lead in the first set, UJ finished on a 20-2 run, which included the last 12 points, to take a 1-0 match lead.
  • The second set saw Jamestown open a 5-1 lead that eventually grew to 16-7.
  • The Jimmies won the final six points of the set, with the last four coming on kills by four different players.
  • A 7-1 run in the third put Jamestown ahead 10-4, and UJ closed out the match by winning six of the last eight points.
  • The Jimmies posted a .214 attack percentage in the third while CCCK hit just (-.034).

UP NEXT

  • The Jimmies will be the number one seed and Dordt (Iowa) University the two seed for the 2024 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men's Volleyball Tournament, which begins on Saturday, April 13.  All six GPAC men's volleyball teams will play in the tournament, with the one and two seeds receiving first round byes.  Jamestown will host the Fab Four on Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20.

    The play-in round will be on Saturday, April 13, with third seed Morningside (Iowa) hosting six seed Central Christian College (Kan.) and fourth seed Kansas Wesleyan hosting fifth seed Ottawa (Kan.)  The play-in winners will head to Jamestown for the Fab Four.

    The GPAC Men's Volleyball Tournament winner receives an automatic berth to the NAIA Men's Volleyball National Championship in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on April 30-May 4 at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse.
