Softball claims sweep of Dakota Wesleyan

MITCHELL, S.D.-- The University of Jamestown softball team scored 21 runs and pounded out 29 hits Tuesday afternoon in a sweep of Dakota Wesleyan University. The Jimmies won by scores of 9-3 and 12-4 in five innings at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Maddie Spaeth (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 R), Trinity Gregg (2-for-5, 1 RBI, 1 R), Abby Blair (2-for-5, 1 RBI), and Gentrey Turin (2-for-4, 1 RBI) all had multiple hits for the Jimmies in game one.
  • After DWU took a 1-0 lead in the first, UJ tied the game in the top of the second on an RBI double by Mackenzie Lefebvre.
  • The Tigers retook the lead with a single run in the bottom of the second, holding on to a 2-1 lead until the fourth.
  • Back-to-back-to-back RBI singles by Spaeth, Turin, and Gregg put Jamestown ahead 4-2, then two more runs came home as Kayla Quintanilla reached on an error by the right fielder.
  • Blair followed with a double to score Quintanilla with UJ's sixth run of the inning.
  • Spaeth and Sidnie Aasen had RBIs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to give the Jimmies a 9-2 lead.
  • DWU added a run late and the score ended 9-3.
  • Hope Ransome (12-4) pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out two.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kayla Quintanilla (3-for-4, 3 R, 1 RBI) and Ally Battistoni (3-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) led a 15-hit attack to help the Jimmies complete the sweep.
  • Abby Blair (2-for-3, 2 R, 1 RBI), Gracie Fisher (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI), Maddie Spaeth (2-for-3, 2 RBI), and Gentrey Turin (2-for-3, 1 RBI) also had multiple hit games.
  • Quintanilla, Fisher, Spaeth, and Turin each drove in a run for UJ in the third, helping the team come back from a 2-1 deficit.
  • Still leading 5-3, the Jimmies broke the game open in the fourth, scoring four more runs.
  • Blair tripled to right to bring in Quintanilla, then came home on a wild pitch.
  • Later in the inning, Spaeth singled up the middle to plate Fisher, and Trinity Gregg hit a sacrifice fly as Battistoni scored to make it 9-3.
  • DWU added one run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to five.
  • Fisher, Battistoni, and Mackenzie Lefebvre all had RBIs in the top of the fifth as Jamestown took a 12-4 lead into the fifth.
  • Blair (10-6) kept the Tigers off the board in the bottom of the fifth and the game ended via the run rule. Blair went the distance, striking out five and walking one over five innings.
