Softball secures second straight sweep Saturday

The University of Jamestown softball team posted its second straight sweep on Saturday afternoon, defeating Mount Marty (S.D.) University 6-2 and 13-2 at the Nelson Family Bubble.

THE BASICS

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mackenzie Lefebvre's sacrifice fly scored Trinity Gregg in the bottom of the first to give Jamestown a 1-0 lead. Gregg led off the inning with a single , then one out later, moved to third base after a double by Kayla Quintanilla.
  • The Jimmies used some two-out magic in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 4-0. With Marin Rasmussen at second and Quintanilla at third, Ally Battistoni tripled to right field, then scored the third run of the inning on a double by Gracie Fisher.
  • Mount Marty cut UJ's lead in half with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but Jamestown got those runs back in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Quintanilla's second double of the game plated Abby Blair and Samarah Martinez for the final Jimmie runs, and the game ended 6-2.
  • Jamestown had 11 hits, including three by Quintanilla and two each by Gregg, Fisher, and Blair.
  • Sunny Halsey (2-0) struck out five in  4 1/3 innings while holding the Lancers to two unearned runs on two hits.
  • Hope Ransome worked the final 2 2/3 innings for her third save. She struck out four and did not allow a hit.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kayla Quintanilla singled home a pair of runs and Hope Ransome doubled in another, as the Jimmies sent eight batters to the plate in a three-run first inning.
  • Samarah Martinez had a run-scoring double and Quintanilla an RBI single for UJ's only two hits in the second inning. However, four Lancer errors and a passed ball helped contribute to three more runs, and Jamestown led 8-1 after two.
  • Mount Marty added a run in the top of the third, then the Jimmies posted their second straight five-run inning.
  • Martinez connected for another double, this time scoring Gentrey Turin and Amanda Burch. Quintanilla reached on an error as Trinity Gregg scored on the play, and Martinez took third. Camryn Schwab's one-out pinch-hit single brought home Martinez and Quintanilla, putting UJ firmly in the driver's seat with a 13-2 lead.
  • Abby Blair (7-3) pitched her sixth straight complete game to get the win. She gave up one earned run on four hits, walking two and striking out one.
  • Three hits by Martinez paced Jamestown's 12-hit attack. Quintanilla had two hits, and seven other Jimmies recorded a hit.

  • Jamestown travels to Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) University for a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m.
