Jimmies secure weekend sweep of Waldorf

JAMESTOWN, N.D.—The University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team swept its weekend series with Waldorf (Iowa) University, defeating the Warriors 4-2 Friday evening and 5-1 Saturday afternoon

FRIDAY: JAMESTOWN 4, WALDORF 2

  • Brad Fortin and Kole Christensson each had a goal and an assist, while Kaelan Shelton and Zane MacDonald also scored as the Jimmies upped their record to 5-0.
  • Waldorf led 1-0 after a goal by Mackenzie Bolger at the 6:03 mark of the first period, but UJ answered 18 seconds later as MacDonald tied the game with an assist by Fortin.
  • Christensson broke the tie with a shorthanded goal at 7:25 and the period ended with Jamestown leading 2-1.
  • Shelton gave the Jimmies a two-goal lead with an unassisted power play goal at 14:05 of the second period, but Waldorf cut the lead to one as Evan Koivunen scored with 27 seconds left before the second intermission.
  • Fortin took a pass from Christensson 2:21 into the third period and scored his fourth of the year for a 4-2 Jamestown lead.
  • Shots ended 31-27 in favor of the Jimmies.
  • Brandon Weare made 25 saves while Warrior goalie Matthew Loney had 27 stops.

SATURDAY: JAMESTOWN 5, WALDORF 1

  • Three goals in the second period helped set the tone for the Jimmies as they finished off a sweep of Waldorf with a 5-1 win.
  • Jordan Baranesky's unassisted goal at 2:58 gave UJ a 1-0 lead, which Brad Fortin doubled 119 seconds later.
  • Kole Christensson made it 3-0 at 14:08 on assists by Baranesky and Wyatt Johnson.
  • UJ held a 35-22 advantage in shots after two periods, including an 18-8 edge in the second.
  • Gunner Vignaroli ended Jamestown's shutout hopes with a power play goal at 5:41 of the third, but Zane MacDonald answered at 8:30 with an assist from Johnson.
  • Matthew McIntyre rounded out the Jimmie scoring with 5:46 left as Jacob Thomas and Alek Erichuk got the helpers.
  • Shots ended 48-29 in favor of UJ. Brandon Weare had 28 saves and Vaughn Holbeche made a career-high 43 stops.
