No. 10 Jimmies win twice at UJ Invitational

The tenth-ranked Jimmie men's volleyball team remained unbeaten with a pair of wins Friday at the UJ Invitational, being held at Harold Newman Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED--MATCH ONE

  • UJ battled through set one against St. Ambrose, never leading by more than three points, and trailed 15-14 after the Bees went on a 3-0 run.
  • A kill by Oguzhan Oguz and Vinny Miska block clinched the set for Jamestown.
  • The Jimmies raced out to an 8-2 second set lead, eventually increasing the gap to 13 (21-8) with four straight points behind the serving of Derek Correa.
  • An 11-3 start to set three gave UJ the momentum it needed to round out the sweep.
  • Nine of the final 12 points went the way of the Jimmies, who hit .500 to St. Ambrose's .091.

JAMESTOWN GAME NOTES

  • The Jimmies hit .414 for the match, with 44 kills and 15 errors on 70 attempts.
  • Caylor Cox hit .611 with 13 kills, and Oguz added 11 kills on 21 attempts.
  • Correa passed out 39 assists and joined Cox with five digs.
  • Adam Lopata had a team-best 10 digs.

ST. AMBROSE GAME NOTES

  • The Bees hit -.017 for the match, with 14 kills and 15 errors on 60 attempts.
  • Nick Fox had six kills and Ethan Chausse 14 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED--MATCH TWO

  • UC Merced started on an 8-3 run and maintained the lead for much of the first set.
  • A service error by the Jimmies put them down 15-12, but a kill by Oguzhan Oguz began a turnaround.
  • Jamestown won the next four points and would never trail again, closing out the set with eight of the final ten points.
  • Set two was another close battle as neither team led by more than two points until a Caylor Cox kill made it 20-17 UJ.
  • After St. Ambrose pulled within 20-18, four in a row by Jamestown provided the momentum for victory.
  • Downey Huynh's second kill of the set put the Jimmies up 2-0 in the match.
  • The third set was never much in doubt for UJ, who had leads of 7-2 and 13-7 midway through the set.
  • A 5-0 run proved to be the match clincher, helping Jamestown go in front 18-10 before finally winning 25-17.

JAMESTOWN GAME NOTES

  • The Jimmies hit .337 for the match with 44 kills and 16 errors on 83 attempts.
  • Oguz had 15 kills and Cox finished with 11.
  • Ever Cancel hit .556 with six kills on nine attempts, and Huynh added seven kills.
  • Derek Correa passed out 40 assists and Adam Lopata had nine digs.

UC MERCED GAME NOTES

  • UC Merced hit .085 for the match with 22 kills and 16 errors on 71 attempts.
  • Chris Morikawa led the way with eight kills, followed by Ryan Kilgore with five.
  • Toby Miller passed out 15 assists.

  • UJ plays two more matches on Saturday at Harold Newman Arena.
