14th-ranked Jimmies take down Minot State at Beaver Bash

MINOT, N.D.-- The 14th-ranked University of Jamestown women's wrestling team stepped out of NAIA competition Saturday, competing at the Beaver Bash Duals hosted by Minot State University.

Jamestown faced the University of Saskatchewan and a pair of NCAA Division II opponents in Chadron State (Neb.) and Minot State. After losing the first two duals, the Jimmies came back with a 33-10 win over Minot State to finish the day with a 1-2 record.

Arianna Marrufo (SR/Dos Palos, Calif.) and Kelly LaCost (JR/Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) earned UJ's victories in contested matches against the Huskies in Saturday's opener. The Jimmies picked up wins due to open weights at 101 and 109, then Marrufo scored a 10-0 tech fall win at 123. Jamestown was open at 155 and 170, giving Saskatchewan a 24-15 lead going into the final match. LaCost sent UJ out on a winning note with a pin of Myah Phillips in 2:15.

Chadron State 28, Jamestown 16

Marrufo and LaCost won their second matches of the day while Allie Baudhuin (130) and Luisita Jara (JR/Menifee, Calif.) (136) also had their arms raised against Chadron State. Three open weights (116, 155, and 170) were the difference as UJ closed the gap to 13-11 following Jara's win.

Marrufo won by 12-1 tech fall against Isabell Ortiz, and Baudhuin followed with a 10-0 tech fall over Josephine Wearmouth at 130. Jara was a 5-4 winner by decision against Ryleigh Dye at 136 before Chadron State took the next three matches. LaCost again pinned her opponent, taking 2:37 to defeat Sofia Rubio.

Just three contested matches happened in the Jimmie-Beaver dual, but Jenna Gerhardt, Marrufo, and LaCost each won as UJ finished the day with a win over the host Beavers.

Gerhardt defeated Zoe Desloges by 10-0 tech fall at 116, Marrufo won by 12-1 tech fall over Jazmin Gorder at 123, and LaCost pinned Madison Parson in 2:46 to account for 13 of the team's 33 points. Minot's wins came via forfeits at 155 and 170, with both teams open at 109.
