FREMONT, Neb.-- The University of Jamestown softball team's bats were held in check Saturday against Midland University, managing just two total hits in 5-0 and 9-1 losses to the Warriors at Christensen Field.
Jamestown (21-11, 5-5 Great Plains Athletic Conference) travels to Mayville State (N.D.) University on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader. Midland (16-4, 6-0 GPAC) is at Dordt (Iowa) College on Monday.
Game 1: Warriors 5, Jimmies 0
Jaylee Hinrichs, a 2018 NAIA second-team All-American, allowed just a single to Miriah Yoder (SR/Devils Lake, ND) leading off the top of the third. She faced only one batter over the minimum and struck out 11. She improved to 9-2 on the season while lowering her earned run average to 0.87.
Angela Brazil homered with two outs in the bottom of the second to give Midland a 1-0 lead. Brazil doubled home the Warriors' second run in the fourth. Jamie Phares connected on a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-0, then a Bobbi Singleton single and a Jimmie passed ball pushed the lead to 5-0.
Kat Miska (SO/Pequot Lakes, MN) (10-4) took the loss for Jamestown. She worked 5 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits, walked three and struck out nine.
Game 2: Warriors 9, Jimmies 1 (5 innings)
Jamestown scored in their first at-bat in game two, but Midland came back with the next nine runs, taking a 9-1 victory in five innings via the eight-run rule..
Mikayla Frost (JR/Melba, ID) reached on an error by the Warriors' shortstop, then advanced to third on a bunt by Allie McCain (SR/Duvall, WA) that was misplayed by the Midland catcher for another error. With runners on first and third, Morgan Geiszler (SO/Horace, ND) hit into a fielder's choice to force out McCain as Frost scored on the play.
McCain had the only Jimmie hit, singling to center with two outs in the top of the fifth.
The Warriors countered with a run in the bottom of the first, then tacked on two in the second, and three more in the third for a 6-1 lead.
Bobbi Singleton hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-1.
Hailee Fliam (5-2) gave up one hit in five innings, walking one and striking out one. Katie Merchant (FR/South Haven, Minn.) (9-6) was tagged with the loss, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on ten hits in four innings. She walked one and struck out five.
