Jimmies swept by Morningside

SIOUX CITY, Iowa-- The University of Jamestown softball team ended its regular season Sunday afternoon, losing a pair of games to Morningside College 6-2 and 7-1.

The Jimmies (27-17 overall, 11-11 Great Plains Athletic Conference) have qualified for the GPAC postseason tournament, which will consist of two four-team brackets hosted by Morningside and Midland (Neb.) Final pairings will be announced on Monday.

Game 1: Mustangs 6, Jimmies 2
UJ jumped on Morningside right away in game one, scoring twice in the first for a 2-0 lead.

With two out, Meghan Ramage (SR/Grand Forks, ND) reached on a fielding error and moved to second on Sydney Prussia (SO/Detroit Lakes, MN)'s single. Morgan Geiszler (SO/Horace, ND) followed with a double to right center field, driving in Ramage and Prussia, but was thrown out trying to take third base.

The scored stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when Morningside broke through for five runs against Katie Merchant (FR/South Haven, Minn.). Three of the first four batters recorded hits, with Ashton Whited's 2-run home run making it 3-2. Morgan Nixon connected on a solo home run off Samm Hamilton (JR/Boise, Idaho) in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead to 6-2.

Mikayla Frost (JR/Melba, ID) and Katie Reisdorfer (SO/Fresno, CA) accounted for the other two Jimmie hits. Merchant (12-8) lasted four innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits. She walked one and struck out six.

Game 2: Mustangs 7, Jimmies 1
Morningside struck for five runs in the bottom of the first, with Rebecca Riley's grand slam chasing starter Samm Hamilton with just one out. Carson Cameron hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to give Morningside a 7-0 lead.

Jamestown broke the shutout bid on Meghan Ramage's RBI double in the top of the seventh.

The Jimmies had a 10-8 edge in hits but left 10 runners on base. Mikayla Frost was 3-for-4 while Allie McCain (SR/Duvall, WA) and Santina Zito (FR/Boise, Idaho) both were 2-for-3. Frost moved into sixth place on the Jimmies' all-time hits list with her 194th career hit.

Hamilton (2-2) gave up four runs on two hits, walking two. Katie Merchant went five innings in relief, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits. She walked three and struck out three.
