Jimmies fall 1-0 to Midland in opening round

DODGE CITY, Kan.-- Alexis Oden's two-out double in the seventh inning proved to be the margin of victory for Midland (Neb.) as the Warriors defeated the University of Jamestown 1-0 Monday in the first game of the 2018 NAIA Opening Round Dodge City Bracket.

Midland's Bobbi Singleton led off the seventh with a double to left, then was lifted for pinch-runner Tessa Kinart. Bailey Hartman's sacrifice bunt moved Kinart to third. Jimmie pitcher Kat Miska (FR/Pequot Lakes, MN) got Angela Brazil to pop out to short, then Oden followed with her run-scoring double down the left field line. Miska struck out Jamie Phares to end the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Jamestown went down in order against Midland starter Jaylee Hinrichs.

Hinrichs (23-9), who was selected the 2018 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Pitcher of the Year, lived up to the billing. The junior from Lincoln, Neb., retired the first 12 Jimmie hitters, including eight by strikeout, before hitting Tifani Schorzman (SR/Coeur d'Alene, ID) to start the bottom of the fifth.

Kelly Halverson (JR/Surrey, BC), leading off the sixth singled for UJ's only hit. Hinrichs finished with 12 strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Miska (15-4), the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Pitcher of the Year, surrendered just three hits and one walk over the first six innings before the Warriors got to her with two doubles in the seventh. Miska finished with her ninth complete game of the year and struck out nine. Her 163 strikeouts this season is third-most in a season by a Jimmie pitcher, two away from tying Brittany Rheault (SR/West Fargo, ND) (165, 2015) for second place.

No. 2 seed Jamestown (43-9) plays No. 4 Oklahoma Wesleyan (29-20), which lost 3-0 to Science & Arts (Okla.), in a loser-out contest Tuesday at 1:00 p.m, Central. Third seed Midland (35-15) faces top seed Science & Arts (51-5) at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday. The winner of that game plays the Jamestown-Oklahoma Wesleyan winner at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.
