JAMESTOWN-- The 16th-ranked University of Jamestown softball team posted a pair of North Star Athletic Association conference victories Sunday against Mayville State (N.D.) University, winning 5-2 and 9-0.
The Jimmies improve to 33-6 overall and 16-3 in the NSAA. Mayville State falls to 12-21 overall and 8-12 in conference play.
Kiana Ishikawa led off the top of the third with a solo home run to give the Comets a 1-0 lead. That score held until the bottom of the fourth, as Meghan Ramage (JR/Grand Forks, ND) drove in the tying run with an RBI single, and Tiffany Buis (SO/New Lenox, IL) followed with a two-run single to make it 3-1 Jimmies.
Kassi Ward (FR/Olympia, WA) drove in a pair in the bottom of the fifth as Jamestown took advantage of three Comet errors to extend the lead to 5-1.
Sierra Niedge plated Bailey Nordquist in the top of the sixth for Mayville State's second run.
Brittany Rheault (SR/West Fargo, ND) (12-3) went the distance in the circle. She gave up five hits and two runs while striking out a season-high seven and issuing two walks.
Shaye Kemball (5-11) took the loss for the Comets, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits over six innings. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Ward and Mikayla Frost (SO/Melba, ID) had two hits each for Jamestown. Four Comets had singles in addition to Ishikawa's home run.
In game two, Morgan Geiszler (FR/Horace, ND) put the Jimmies ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first with a RBI single, then Kassi Ward doubled in two more runs to make it 3-0.
Ward's three-run home run in the bottom of the third capped off a six-run inning that extended the lead to 9-0. Tifani Schorzman (SR/Coeur d'Alene, ID) doubled in the first run of the inning, then a bases-loaded walk to Emma Keller (SR/Poulsbo, WA) and an error on a fly ball hit by Mikayla Frost finished the scoring.
Kat Miska (FR/Pequot Lakes, MN) (10-1) pitched a three-hit shutout for the win. She struck out 12 and walked three in her sixth complete game and second shutout of the season.
Haley Kravetz (5-12) pitched two innings-plus, giving up eight runs on six hits. She walked one and struck out one. Shaye Kemball relieved Kravetz in the third and worked the final two innings, surrendering a run on two hits, striking out two.
Geiszler and Ward had two hits for UJ. Kemball, Jade Ledochowski, and Breeana Martinez had the Comet hits.
The teams will conclude their series with a doubleheader Monday at Kost Field in Casselton, N.D. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
