UJ sweeps VCSU; Dunnigan wins 52nd career game

VALLEY CITY, N.D.-- Miriah Yoder (SO/Devils Lake, ND) hit a grand slam and a double to drive in five runs, and Hanna Dunnigan (SR/Regina, SK) set a new UJ record with her 52nd career win as the Jimmie softball team swept Valley City State (N.D.) 8-1 and 3-1 Saturday.

Yoder's first career home run was the big blow in a five-run fifth as Jamestown broke the game open, taking an 8-1 lead.

Kelly Halverson (SO/Surrey, BC) was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Emma Keller (JR/Poulsbo, WA) had two hits as UJ recorded 10 hits in the opener.

Tifani Schorzman (JR/Coeur d'Alene, ID) drove in the first two runs with a double, then Yoder drove in Schorzman with a double of her own.

Dunnigan pitched a complete game, striking out nine while allowing a run on four hits. Her 52nd career win broke the previous record of 51 held by Danielle Yunto, who pitched for the Jimmies from 2004-2007. Her nine strikeouts gave her 195 for the season, extending her single-season record.

Morgan Nalley took the loss for the Vikings. She pitched five innings and gave up eight runs on nine hits. Jayme Menard, Emily Smith, Tatum Lundin, and Nalley had the VCSU hits.

Brittany Rheault (JR/West Fargo, ND) went the distance in game two, striking out seven as Jamestown won 3-1. Emma Keller had another two-hit game and scored the Jimmies' first run. Kelly Halverson and Tifani Schorzman had run-scoring hits as UJ led 2-0 after one.

Keller drove in Kyle Macaig to push the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third. VCSU scored one in the bottom of the sixth as Morgan Nalley was hit by a pitch to force home Jayme Menard.

Ashley Metcalf took the loss for VCSU. She allowed six hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out two and walking one.

The teams will conclude the regular season in Jamestown on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. from Trapper Field.
