TUCSON, Ariz.-- The Jimmie softball team's losing streak reached four games after Jamestown dropped 6-5 and 6-3 decisions against William Penn (Iowa) and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).
UJ fell behind 4-0 to William Penn after one, but answered back with three runs in the top of the second. Marissa Duchi (JR/Redding, CA)'s double and Hanna Dunnigan (SR/Regina, SK)'s triple accounted for the RBI in the inning.
Unfortunately for the Jimmies, the Statesmen put up three more runs in their half of the second to take a three-run lead.
A fourth-inning RBI by Tifani Schorzman (JR/Coeur d'Alene, ID) and a fifth-inning run-scoring single by Emma Keller (JR/Poulsbo, WA) brought Jamestown within one at 6-5, but the Jimmies couldn't get another run.
Duchi and Dunnigan had three hits each while Schorzman and Keller recorded two hits a piece. Dunnigan took the loss in the circle, pitching a complete game and allowing four earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Game two was against a familiar foe as the Jimmies and Dakota Wesleyan Tigers met for the fourth time this season and second in Arizona.
Keller opened the scoring with an RBI single that plated Emma Gilbert (FR/Kelowna, BC) in the top of the third. The Tigers scored twice to take a 2-1 lead after three innings, but Linda Ontiveros (SR/Yuma, AZ) singled to score Duchi and tie the game once again.
Dakota Wesleyan put up a three-spot in their next time up to lead 5-2. Schorzman doubled to score Duchi in the fifth, however, that was the last offense UJ could muster.
Keller finished 3-for-4 and Gilbert racked up two hits from the eighth spot in the order. Brittany Rheault (JR/West Fargo, ND) pitched three innings in relief of Keller, who started and also worked three innings. Both pitchers allowed three earned runs with Rheault posting three strikeouts.
Jamestown (12-8) plays Madonna (Mich.) at 10:00 am CST and Judson (Ill.) at 2:30 pm CST in their second-to-last day of their Arizona trip.
