Box Score 3 LEAVENWORTH, Kan.-- The Jimmie softball team won both of its games in a split doubleheader Sunday, 10-5 in eight innings against University of Saint Mary (Kan.), then shutting out No.9 Morningside (Iowa) 4-0 in the second game.
Tifani Schorzman (JR/Coeur d'Alene, ID) came through with two clutch at-bats for Jamestown against Saint Mary. Trailing 5-3 in the top of the seventh, her single scored Emma Keller (JR/Poulsbo, WA) and Kylie Macaig (SO/Airdrie, AB) to tie the game at five and send it to extra innings.
In the eighth, Schorzman came through again, this time reaching base on a misplayed grounder by the Saint Mary shortstop. The error allowed Linda Ontiveros (SR/Yuma, AZ) to score and advanced Mikayla Frost (FR/Melba, ID) to third and Keller to second.
Meghan Ramage (SO/Grand Forks, ND) then stepped up and delivered a two-run single to make it 8-5. One batter later, Kelly Halverson (SO/Surrey, BC) connected on a two-run single for the fourth and fifth Jimmie runs of the inning, giving UJ a 10-5 lead going into the bottom of the eighth.
The Spires pushed one run across in their half, but Keller was able to finish the inning with no further damage.
Keller (6-4) picked up the win in relief of starter Brittany Rheault (JR/West Fargo, ND). Rheault pitched the first four innings but did not figure in the decision, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out six and walking three. Keller gave up four runs on nine hits in her four innings of work, striking out one.
Jamestown finished with 18 hits off four different Saint Mary pitchers. Hanna Dunnigan (SR/Regina, SK) was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Halverson had three hits and a pair knocked in while Schorzman also had three hits and three RBI. Keller was 2-for-4 including her second homer of the season and scored four times. Macaig also had two hits and scored once.
Facing one of their toughest challenges so far this season, Jamestown held strong in a 4-0 win over Morningside (Iowa), ranked ninth in the previous Coaches' Top 25 Poll. Dunnigan pitched a three-hitter for her fifth shutout this season and tenth in her career. The start also marked her 100th pitching appearance for the Jimmies, becoming the first UJ player to reach the mark.
Kaitlyn Combo (SO/Yuba City, CA)'s sacrifice fly brought home Frost in the bottom of the first to give UJ a 1-0 lead. A two out, bases-loaded walk to Marissa Duchi (JR/Redding, CA) in the third inning gave Jamestown their second run, and the Jimmies tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a Frost single and a ball hit by Ontiveros that was misplayed for an error, allowing Duchi to score.
Dunnigan allowed scratch singles in the third, fourth, and seventh innings while only one Morningside runner reached third base. The left hander did not walk a batter as she improved to 6-4 this season, lowering her earned run average to 1.86.
Frost was a perfect 4-for-4 and scored a pair of runs in the leadoff spot. Keller, Schorzman, Halverson, and Ontiveros had the other Jimmie hits.
Now 16-12 this season, Jamestown travels to Yankton, S.D., for a doubleheader against Mount Marty College on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
