ABERDEEN, S.D.-- Offense was at a premium for not only the Jimmie softball team, but also their opponents, as the 2017 season got underway Saturday at the Presentation College Dome Tournament.
In the first game of the day, Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) scored two runs in the top of the first against Jamestown, but that would be the only runs Hanna Dunnigan (SR/Regina, SK) (0-1) would allow. The senior lefty allowed just four hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out eight.
UJ got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with Kelly Halverson (SO/Surrey, BC)'s unearned run. With one out, Halverson singled to center, stole second, then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Miriah Yoder (SO/Devils Lake, ND). DWU right fielder Katherine Holt bobbled Kaitlyn Combo (SO/Yuba City, CA)'s fly ball, allowing Halverson to score.
Halverson had both Jimmie hits in the game, one off of Tiger starter Lorissa Loeppky (1-0), and the other off reliever Sierra Haage. Loeppky worked the first five innings, walking one, striking out one, and allowing just the one unearned run. Haage pitched the final two innings for the save, striking out three.
Jamestown faced Dordt (Iowa) in the second game of the day. The Jimmies and Defenders traded zeroes until the bottom of the sixth, when Dordt plated the game's only run.
Marissa Vandenberg tripled to right field, and following a walk to Tessa Howerzyl, Corrine Valdix's sacrifice fly scored Vandenberg.
CJ VanDerZwaag scattered two hits, a first-inning single to Halverson, and a double to Combo leading off the fifth, to earn the shutout. She struck out three and walked only one.
Brittany Rheault (JR/West Fargo, ND) (0-1) was the hard-luck losing pitcher, allowing four hits over six innings. The right-hander walked one and struck out nine.
The Jimmies are back in action at the Presentation Dome on Sunday, as they will face Minnesota-Crookston and Southwest Minnesota State.
