Jimmies register sweep of Comets on Senior Day

The Jimmie softball team sent out its seniors in style on Saturday, recording a conference sweep of Mayville State. Jamestown took game one 11-3 in six innings and won game two by a 9-4 score.

Emily Newman (SR/Victoria, BC, Canada) and Rylee Perez (SR/Indio, CA) both were 3 for 3 at the plate to lead the Jimmies' 15-hit attack. Kalea Chapman (SR/Juneau, AK), Autumn Wang (SR/Devils Lake, ND), and Brook Rheault (SR/West Fargo, ND) also had two hits each.

The Comets took a 3-0 lead after their second at bat. Alex Tinoco hit a two-run homer in the first and Danielle Sheridan had an RBI double in the second inning.

UJ countered with five runs of their own in the bottom half. Sydney Greenlund (SR/West Fargo, ND) hit a two-run home run, her fourth of the season, to make it 3-2. After a Brook Rheault single, Perez followed with a two-run shot of her own to make it 4-3. The home run was the second of the season for Perez. Newman's RBI double rounded out the Jimmie scoring, making it 5-3.

Jamestown scored two more in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 10-3 lead. Brook Rheault's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth scored Chapman for the Jimmies' 11th run, ending the game via the eight-run rule.

Sheridan was 2 for 2 while five other Comets had a single hit.

Hanna Dunnigan (JR/Regina, SK, Canada) pitched her 12th complete game of the season to improve her record to 12-5. The left-hander allowed three runs on seven hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out five. Haley Kravetz took the loss for Mayville State, falling to 5-13. She worked 2 2/3 innings and surrendered seven runs (six earned) on eight hits. Kravetz walked two and did not strike out a batter.

In game two, Dani Norsby (SR/Shoreline, WA) gave the Jimmies an early 2-0 with a single that scored Perez and Brook Rheault. Monica Gomez's groundout in the top of the second scored Tiffany Soria and cut the home team's lead to 2-1.

Jamestown answered in the bottom half as Kylie Macaig (FR/Airdrie, AB, Canada) scored on a single by Perez. Wang homered to center in the bottom of the third to make it 4-1. The homer was Wang's 11th on the year, the third-most in a season by a Jimmie.

UJ broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs with two outs to take a 7-1 lead. Sydney Jeffers (SR/Richmond, BC, Canada) scored on an error, Emily Newman stole home, and Norsby hit an RBI double.

Kiana Ishikawa scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth to make it 7-2 Jamestown. A Norsby sacrifice fly and Wang double brought home two more runs and put the Jimmies up by seven, 9-2.

The Comets threatened in the top of the seventh, scoring a run on an error and another on Soria's single, but Dunnigan was able to strike out Megan Rabe with runners at second and third to end the game.

Emma Keller (SO/Poulsbo, WA) (6-1) got credit for the win. She pitched two innings and gave up one run on two hits. She walked one and did not strike out a batter. Monica Gomez (7-10) was the loser for Mayville State. She worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on six hits, walking four and striking out one.

Newman, Norsby, and Wang finished with two hits for Jamestown. Ishikawa, Soria, Nina Gurgian, and Rabe all had two hits for the Comets.

The sweep moves the Jimmies to 30-13 overall and 14-7 in conference play. The Comets fall to 13-28 overall and 6-16 in conference.

The two teams will meet for a doubleheader in Portland, N.D., Sunday at 1 pm.
