Jimmies open season with sweep of St. Cloud State

ST. CLOUD, Minn.-- The Jimmie softball team opened the 2016 with a sweep of the NCAA Division II St. Cloud State University Huskies Friday, winning 12-10 and 6-3.

Emily Newman (SR/Victoria, BC, Canada) went 4 for 5 with a home run, five RBI, and three runs scored, Sydney Jeffers (SR/Richmond, BC, Canada) also was 4 for 5, with a double, two runs and an RBI, and Sydney Greenlund (SR/West Fargo, ND) was 3 for 4 with a solo home run as the Jimmies pounded out 16 hits en route to a 12-10 victory in game one.

Rylee Perez (SR/Indio, CA) added two hits and Autumn Wang (SR/Devils Lake, ND) smashed a home run for Jamestown, who took a 7-0 lead after an inning and a half. St. Cloud State rallied in the second, third, and fourth innings to cut the Jimmie lead to 9-8. UJ led 12-8 going into the bottom of the seventh inning and held on for the win despite the Huskies adding two runs.

Brittany Rheault (SO/West Fargo, ND) earned the win in relief, pitching 3 2/3 innings. She scattered six hits and allowed two runs, walked three, and struck out two. Hanna Dunnigan (JR/Regina, SK, Canada) started for the Jimmies. She pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits, walked two, and struck out four.

After scoring 12 runs in the first game, the Jimmies managed to scratch just one run across over the first five innings and trailed 3-1 entering the sixth.

Emily Newman led off with a walk, then moved to second on a single by Kelly Halverson (FR/Surrey, BC, Canada). Autumn Wang doubled to left center, scoring Newman with Halverson advancing to third. Dani Norsby (SR/Shoreline, WA) followed with a double of her own, scoring Wang and Halverson.

With one out, Linda Ontiveros (JR/Yuma, AZ) singled to left, scoring pinch-runner Kylie Macaig (FR/Airdrie, AB, Canada). Connie Miller (SR/Shelby, MT), pinch-running for Ontiveros, stole second and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Rylee Perez.

Emma Keller (SO/Poulsbo, WA) picked up the win in relief of starter Brittany Rheault. Keller pitched five innings and allowed five hits, two earned runs, walked one, and struck out two. Rheault went two innings, giving up one run on three hits, while walking one and striking out one.

Norsby finished 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI. Newman, Halverson, Wang, and Ontiveros accounted for the other Jimmie hits.

Jamestown is back in action Saturday with a doubleheader against the University of Sioux Falls.
