Jamestown – The University of Jamestown women's wrestling team got solid performances in Saturday's Can/Am Open at the Larson Center.
Dejshane White (FR/Tacoma, Wash.) won the 170-pound weight class, posting a 4-0 record, all by falls including a win over UJ upper classman and two-time All-American Mary Westman (SR/Cattaraugus, N.Y.) who finished runner-up.
"D.J. (White) is off to a great start," said UJ women's wrestling coach Tony DeAnda. "She's undefeated after two tournaments and beat a two-time All-American today. Her future is really bright."
Dajan Treder (JR/Anchorage, Alaska) won the 116 pound weight class by posting a 4-0 mark including a fall over Silke Svenkeson of the University of Saskatchewan.
Marlie Gillis (SO/Gladstone, Mich.) won the 143 pound division with a 4-0 record with a fall, two technical falls and a decision.
Renee Samano (SR/Veneta, Ore.) finished second at 191 pounds, winning two of her three matches by falls before dropping a tight 4-2 decision to Sonya Legate of Waldorf.
Kim Cardenas (JR/Staten Island, N.Y.) won both of her matches at 101 pounds against Hope Cordoviz of Waldorf, once by technical fall 10-0 and the other by a 10-4 decision.
Jenna Elmlinger (FR/Buffalo, Wyo.) won the 130 pound division winning all four matches including a fall, two technical falls and a decisive 9-0 decision.
Anna Naylor (SO/San Jose, Calif.) won at 155 pounds, defeating teammate Myranda Velazquez (FR/Los Banos, Calif.) (Los Banos, Calif.) who finished runner-up after Nayler's 10-0 technical fall victory.
Elisabeth Galvez (FR/Toppenish, Wash.) finished third at 109 pounds, Haley Hedgecock (SO/Janesville, Wis.) (Janesville, Wisc.) was third at 116 pounds and Tricia Martin (Traverse City, Mich.) was third at 123 pounds.
"Last weekend at our first tournament our freshman really came through," said DeAnda. "Today we saw our upperclassmen perform well which means we have a more balanced team than the past few seasons."
The Jimmies will return to action in two weeks on November 14 at the Missouri Valley College Open in Marshall, Mo.
