Jimmies Beat Vikings, Warriors in the Desert

After a rough start in Arizona, the Jimmies got a sweep Tuesday in Tucson.

The University of Jamestown defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 9-2 and then beat Missouri Valley in a wild 7-5 extra inning game. Tied 1-all after seven innings, the Jimmies scored six runs in the top of the eighth then held off a rally in the bottom for a 7-5 win.

The Jimmies banged out 19 hits in the doubleheader.

"We swung the bats pretty well," coach Kevin Gall said. "We played better today and it was good to get a couple wins."

Hanna Dunnigan and Emily Newman each had five hits on the day.

Dunnigan also pitched well, getting the win in the opening game and the save in the nightcap.

"She's a big strong girl and she's done well," Gall said.

The Jimmies scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away in the opener.

Dunnigan allowed six hits in the circle with four strikeouts in the complete-game effort. She also went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Newman added a pair of hits with three RBI, while Hattie Fullmer finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

In the second game, it was quiet until late.

Tied 1-1 after seven innings, the Jimmie busted out for six runs in the top of the eighth inning. Kaya Naiwi hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the inning off Emily Snow, but Dunnigan got the final two outs to end it. It was just the second home run the Jimmies have allowed through nine games.

"Last year we had a tendency to give up some home runs. So far we've done a better job keeping the ball in the park. That might be a positive thing to look at," Gall said.

Newman went 3-for-4 to pace the Jimmies' 9-hit attack. Dunnigan was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Jessica Snow added two RBI.

The Jimmies improved to 3-6 with the wins against quality competition.

"They gave us some problems for sure, but we were able to hang in there," Gall said.

Two more tough games are on tap for today with Aquinas, Mich. and 10th-ranked Olivet Nazarene, Ill.
