Women's Soccer Game Preview: Jimmies to Battle Roosevelt in Season Opener

Arlington Heights, Ill. – The University of Jamestown women's soccer team will have their first contest of the 2026 season Sunday afternoon at Roosevelt University.

The Jimmies played in a couple of preseason games, that being a scrimmage against Concordia University (Minn.) and an exhibition against Dakota Wesleyan University that resulted in a 2-2 draw. The Roosevelt Lakers got their season underway on Thursday, August 27 where they tied the Upper Iowa Peacocks 2-2 as they head into the matchup with UJ at 0-0-1.

Game Information
The Teams

The Jimmies will return three of their top four scorers from the 2025 season, which includes leading scorer Vega Canada who had three goals last year to get her career total up to 10. Nellie Brown and Langley Grow are other key offensive returns with both scoring a goal plus an assist from last year. Top defensemen returner will be Kyah Gabel, who started every game last year and led all position players in minutes with 1456 (85.6 per game).

15th-year head coach Nick Becker will be relying on two freshman goaltenders to hold it down between the pipes. Both Taylor Musser (Lewiston, Idaho) and Ellie Dake (Courtland, Minn.) will compete for minutes with the Jimmies season soon to begin.

The Lakers are coming off a season in which they went 5-10-2 with a 3-10-1 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Roosvelt University is in their third year as an NCAA Division-II member and just like the Jimmies, the Lakers were officially accepted as full member of NCAA D-II for this school year.

The Lakers return just one of their top three scorers from a season ago, that being Daisy Garcia who was legit with 14 points off five goals and four assists. Bella Perry and Kenna Wisniewski also come back after each found the back of the net two times in 2025. Freshman Dayami Arias and junior Regina Rosales scored the two goals against Upper Iowa in Roosevelt's first contest of the season. Angelina Vazquez is the lead returning netminder for the Lakes after going 2-4-1 in 2025 with a 2.29 goals-against average and a .619 save percentage. However, it was freshman Kaylee Sarnicola who made the start against the Peacocks and finished with four saves and two goals conceded in the tie.

Sunday's season-opener will be the first recorded instance Jamestown and Roosevelt have played each other in women's soccer.
