Jimmies advance to Sioux City with five-set win over Benedictine (Kan.)

The ninth-ranked University of Jamestown women's volleyball team advanced to the final site of the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa, with a five-set Opening Round win over Benedictine (Kan.) College Saturday evening at Harold Newman Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Set One (23-25)
    The Jimmies opened up a 10-4 lead before Benedictine began to chip away. A 6-1 run brought the Ravens within 11-10, and the deficit was finally overcome after a Benedictine ace made it 18-16. UJ's final lead of the set came after a Raven attack error made it 22-21, then Benedictine finished with four of the final five points to take the opener.
  • Set Two (25-11)
    Backed by a team hitting percentage of .600, Jamestown evened the match with a comfortable 14-point win. Leading 8-7, the Jimmies reeled off eight straight points, then used a 6-0 run to build the lead to 22-9. Johnson had four kills in the frame for UJ, who also got three kills from Olson and Zieske.
  • Set Three (12-25)
    Benedictine took set three just as easily as Jamestown won the previous set. for a 2-1 match lead. The Ravens started with nine straight points on the way to a 12-2 lead and would lead by as many as fifteen points. The Jimmies committed a match-high eight errors in the set and finished with a .000 hitting percentage.
  • Set Four (25-8)
    The momentum shifted sides yet again with UJ dominating set four. Olson, Bertsch, and Logan Sherman all had kills to help the Jimmies get out to a 12-3 advantage. Five different players had at least two kills, led by Zieske's five kills on .500 hitting.

  • Set Five (15-7)
    Jamestown wrapped up the comeback win by opening up an 8-2 lead after back-to-back kills by Hegerle and Bertsch. The Ravens got as close as 9-5 but three straight points by UJ ended any hopes of a further rally.

UP NEXT

  • Jamestown is one of 24 teams to advance to the final site in Sioux City, Iowa. Pool play assignments will be announced on Sunday, November 19 by 5 p.m., with pool play matches beginning on November 29. The eight pool winners advance to the quarterfinals on December 2, with the semifinals set for December 4 and the championship on December 5.
