Jimmies Winning Streak Snapped to No. 2 Wayne State

Jamestown, N.D. - The University of Jamestown women's volleyball team ran into a roadblock, getting downed by the No. 2 Wayne State Wildcats in straight sets
Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Jimmies with their record now at 13-4 and 6-3 in the NSIC. WSC stays perfect against conference foes with a 9-0 Northern Sun record and a 17-1 overall mark.

None of the three sets were that pretty for the Jimmies. In the first set, Wayne State jumped out to an early 8-2 advantage. Jamestown had a nice stretch after this, with four of the next five points after Caroline Puetz started this with a kill, then Kate Wiebesiek got a service ace, Schopp notched a kill, and finally Schopp and Kallyn Grove teamed up for a block and the Jimmies were only behind 9-6.

Unfortunately for UJ, Wayne State pushed up to a 17-8 lead and despite a kill and a block assist by Lempka for the next two Jamestown points, the Wildcats got eight of the final nine points as they won the set 25-11.

WSC attacked .297 in set one (14-3-37) while the Jimmies were pat at .000 (7-7-37). The Wildcats also posted three service aces and five blocks.

Jamestown started the second set on the right foot after a couple of attack errors, a kill by Mya Foslien and an ace from Ava Bertsch made it 4-0 Jamestown early. A bit later and Gracie Adamson contributed three kills to make it 9-7 Jamestown.

This is where the fun ended though. 11 of the next 12 points belonged to the Wildcats as they took the reins up 18-10. Lempka had a pair of kills late in the set, but the Jimmies were downed 25-13 in the second set.

The Wildcats attacked even better in set two at .371 (16-3-35) while Jamestown still struggled at .000 (8-8-28). The Wildcats net front presence was bothersome to the Jimmies with four blocks in the set and nine total for the game at this point.

The third set started with the score at 3-3, but Wayne State then went on an 11-1 run for the second-straight set as they took command 14-4. Schopp, Adamson and Lempka had one kill each as the Jimmies and Wildcats traded the next six points, but another run ended the match with a quick third set.

Puetz had a kill as the final Jamestown point of the afternoon and Wayne State took the match with a 25-9 set victory in the third with the Jimmies being swept for just the second time in the season.

Lempka totaled six kills to pace the Jamestown attackers while Foslien had four kills on 10 swings for a decent .300 attacking percentage (4-1-10). Ketterling led the Jamestown back-line with 13 digs and Bertsch got her fourth double-double of the season in the effort with 11 assists and 10 digs.

Wayne State posted an attacking percentage a .343 (44-7-108) while the Jimmies dipped below zero at -.010 (21-22-101). The Wildcats outpaced UJ in service aces (7-2), blocks (10-2), and digs (54-42) as well.

Jamestown will look to rebound on the road next weekend against two tough opponents, beginning with Southwest Minnesota State University on Friday, October 9 at 6 p.m.
