Not even snow and single-digit temperatures could stop the high-powered Morningside (Iowa) College Mustangs Saturday at Rollie Greeno Field. The NAIA's top-ranked team gained 538 yards of total offense on the way to a 49-13 win over the University of Jamestown.
Morningside led 21-0 after the first quarter on rushing touchdowns by running back Arnijae Ponder and quarterback Trent Solsma. Solsma also threw a 7-yard touchdown to Connor Niles.
After a scoreless second quarter, Aundre Purnell (SO/Garden Grove, Calif.) got the Jimmies on the board with a 44-yard intereception returned for touchdown. Kai Madela (FR/Henderson, Nev.)'s extra point made it 21-7 with 12:39 in the third.
Solsma connected with Riley Rischling and Ponder for touchdowns to push the Mustangs' lead to 35-7. With 4:22 left in the quarter, Jordan Mann (JR/Bismarck, N.D.) plunged in from a yard out to make it 35-13.
Reid Jurgensmeier was the recipient of Solsma's fourth touchdown pass of the game, covering 21 yards, to make it 43-13. Anthony Sims capped off the scoring with a 74-yard run with 10:34 in the game.
Jamestown managed 209 yards of offense, with 142 coming on the ground. Jimmy Hatch (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) finished with 78 yards on 17 carries and Allen Jevning (SO/Brainerd, Minn.) rushed 16 times for 46 yards. Mann was 4-of-18 passing for 67 yards. Zach Grismanauskas (FR/Henderson, Nev.) had one catch for 41 yards while Tanner Mathern (SO/Edgeley, N.D.), James Hagen (SO/Henderson, Nev.), and Zeb Taber (JR/Fargo, N.D.) all had one catch.
Caleb Ellingson (SR/Jamestown, N.D.) had 12 tackles (9 solo), including a sack and two tackles for loss. Vincent Corral (FR/Gilbert, Ariz.) also had a sack. Ben Steinolfson (SR/Steele, N.D.) had eight tackles, seven of them solo.
Jamestown finishes the season 3-8 overall and 2-7 in their first season in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
