GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of Jamestown women's tennis team overcame an early deficit to secure a 4-3 victory against the University of Mary Saturday evening at Choice Health and Fitness.
With the win, the Jimmies improved their overall record to 4-5 and evened their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) record at 4-4. The University of Mary dropped to 4-9 overall and 2-5 in conference action.
UMary took the early momentum by capturing the doubles point with victories on two of the three courts.
The Jimmies struck first at the No. 1 doubles flight, where the tandem of
Bodil van Zeijl and
Julie van Zeijl delivered a dominant 6-0 shutout over Maja Panganiban and Natalia Jorge Mazaro.
However, the Marauders answered back to secure the team point. At the No. 2 position, Josie Sueflohn and Anna Sueflohn defeated
Laia Vallespi and
Sydney Friesen 6-3. The doubles point was officially decided at the No. 3 spot, where Elizabeth Lekse and Brooke Mulholland held off
Anna Sharandachenko and
Mariia Sharandachenko by a score of 6-4.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles play, UJ took control of the match by sweeping the top four flights.
Anna Sharandachenko cruised to a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Anna Sueflohn at No. 4 singles. At the No. 2 spot,
Bodil van Zeijl defeated Elizabeth Lekse in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Julie van Zeijl followed suit at No. 1 singles, taking down Natalia Jorge Mazaro 6-3, 6-2.
Mariia Sharandachenko added the final point for Jamestown at the No. 3 flight, securing a 6-1, 6-2 win against Josie Sueflohn.
The Marauders picked up wins in the final two singles matches. Maja Panganiban defeated
Laia Vallespi 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 5 position. The most competitive matchup of the evening came at No. 6 singles, where Brooke Mulholland outlasted
Sydney Friesen in a three-set battle, winning 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6).
Jamestown's next matchup is on Tuesday, March 31 in Mankato, Minn., against Bethany Lutheran College.
