MANDAN, N.D. – The University of Jamestown women's tennis team concluded their inaugural season with a highly successful weekend at the Mandan Tennis Center, securing back-to-back Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) victories over the University of Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State.
Following a split in Grand Forks on March 28 that saw the Jimmies fall to Minnesota Crookston 4-3 before rebounding with a 4-3 victory over the University of Mary, Jamestown used this weekend's momentum to improve its season record to 6-5 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
Jamestown 5, Minnesota Duluth 2
On Saturday, UJ dispatched the University of Minnesota Duluth by a score of 5-2. With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 2-9 overall and 1-8 in the NSIC.
Jamestown captured the crucial doubles point with wins on courts one and three. At No. 1 doubles,
Julie van Zeijl and
Bodil van Zeijl cruised to a 6-1 victory over Olivia Gorton and Courtney Eppen.
Laia Vallespi and
Mariia Sharandachenko clinched the doubles point at the No. 3 spot with a tight 7-6 win against Morgan Hammer and Danica Silcox. UMD's Carly Chaney and Paige Heideman avoided the sweep by defeating
Anna Sharandachenko and
Sydney Friesen 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, the Jimmies overpowered the Bulldogs with four victories to secure the dual.
UMD collected wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles flights from Paige Heideman and Danica Silcox, respectively.
Jamestown 4, Bemidji State 3
Jamestown concluded the weekend on Sunday with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Bemidji State. The Beavers dropped to 10-7 overall and 4-6 in the NSIC.
Bemidji State took the early advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches to secure the team point. Jamestown's top pair of Julie and
Bodil van Zeijl picked up the lone doubles win for the Jimmies, defeating Mia Leshem and Marla Davies 6-1, to finish the season at 11-0. The Beavers answered with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles by Lauren Rutten and Paula Garcia Acebal, alongside a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles by Valesca Rodriguez and Ana Lucia Ibanez.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, the Jimmies rallied to win four of the six matchups and clinch the overall victory.
Bemidji State's singles points came from Paula Garcia Acebal at No. 2 and Lauren Rutten at No. 5.
