JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The Jamestown women's tennis team secured a 6-1 home victory over Winona State on Friday afternoon at the Two Rivers Activity Center.
With the win, the Jimmies improved their overall record to 3-3 and their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) mark to 3-2. Winona State fell to 4-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
UJ established an early advantage by claiming the doubles point, winning two of the three matches.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, the pairing of
Julie van Zeijl and
Bodil van Zeijl shut out Lainy Ristau and Ally Burger 6-0.
Mariia Sharandachenko and
Anna Sharandachenko secured the pivotal second doubles win with a 6-4 victory at the No. 3 position over Izabel Barr and Brooke McDonald.
Winona State avoided the sweep in doubles play when Nikita Agrawal and Debbie Ogdahl picked up a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles over
Sydney Friesen and
Laia Vallespi.
In singles competition, Jamestown dominated by taking five of the six matchups.
The van Zeijl sisters anchored the top of the lineup.
Julie van Zeijl claimed the No. 1 singles match against Lainy Ristau 6-4, 7-5.
Bodil van Zeijl followed with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Nikita Agrawal at the No. 2 spot.
The Jimmies also saw strong performances in the middle of their lineup.
Mariia Sharandachenko defeated Izabel Barr 6-0, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles,
Anna Sharandachenko posted a perfect 6-0, 6-0 shutout victory against Ally Burger.
Laia Vallespi added another point for Jamestown with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Kate Velander at No. 5 singles.
Winona State earned its lone singles victory at the No. 6 position, where Debbie Ogdahl defeated
Sydney Friesen 6-2, 7-6.
The Jimmies return to the court on Saturday, hosting Minnesota State at 2 p.m.
