SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Jamestown baseball team faced a tough battle against #18 Augustana University on Friday afternoon. Despite a resilient effort that included a late offensive push, the Jimmies (5-16, 1-8 NSIC) were unable to overcome an early deficit, falling 10-7 at Ronken Field.
Game Summary
After a scoreless opening frame, the Jimmies struck first in the top of the second inning.
Mason Shea reached base with a walk, stole second, and later scored on a wild pitch, giving Jamestown a 1-0 advantage.
However, the lead was short-lived. Augustana responded in the bottom of the second, plating two runs on a two-run home run by Jake Lundquist to take a 2-1 lead. The Vikings added two more runs in the third inning. Ragan Pinnow brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Carter McPeak followed with an RBI single to center field, extending Augustana's lead to 4-1.
Jamestown clawed back in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded,
Melvin Maldonado hit a sacrifice fly to score
Mason Shea.
Benney Benitez followed with an RBI single to left field, and
Mathieu Morin added an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.
The Vikings regained control in the bottom of the fifth. McPeak came through with a clutch two-run double to center field, pushing Augustana ahead 6-4.
Augustana added another run in the sixth inning. Brandon Weigel executed a sacrifice bunt to bring home Nate Soelter, increasing the lead to 7-4.
The Jimmies refused to go quietly, battling back in the seventh. Pinch-hitter
Ben Swennumson singled and later scored on a wild pitch. Moments later, Morin also crossed the plate on a wild pitch, pulling Jamestown within one run at 7-6.
Augustana capitalized on Jimmie miscues in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two unearned runs on an RBI single by Lundquist and an RBI groundout by Kobe Eikmeier to stretch their lead to 9-6. They added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI groundout by Pinnow.
In the top of the ninth,
Ryder Peace delivered an RBI single through the right side to bring the Jimmies within three runs. However, the comeback fell short as
Mason Shea flied out to end the game.
